  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tokina 16-28 T3.0 Cinema Lens

Seems like soemthing of an absurd price bump. :bored:

And IIRC, they were going to do their own cinema version of the 11-16 for around $2K. So it seems high related to that as well.

If I'm remembering right, the initial price estimate for this lens was around $10,000. For a full-frame zoom (which the 11-16mm and the Sigma 18-35mm are not), $6000 is not an unreasonable price if they pull it off well. It's competing directly with the Focus Optics "Ruby" 14-24mm and the Zeiss CZ.2 15-30mm, which cost around $10,000 and $20,000 respectively.

I know that it seems like a price jump, but if we forget about the cropped sensor APS-C 11-16mm, then this lens is still pretty cheap compared to its competition. I could be wrong because I'm not in the market for a wide lens in this range, but my brief knowledge of the subject tells me Tokina is poised to sell a boatload of these

+1 on what Alan and Jason said.
This is not an APS-C lens, so it's different to the mentioned lenses. GL Optics offers a rehoused version of the 16-28 which is still cheaper though.

From GL OPTICS:
The cost rehouse: 3,650 USD(Please note: This price don't include the Lens body. If you need the Lens and rehouse service, we can buy the lens body as you required. The price of Tokina 16-28 Lens is 850 USD.)
GL Optics: $4.500 US (including the lens)
TOKINA: $5.900 US (est.)

so it's basically a difference of $1.400 (and it's still based on guess work!) What you get for the difference remains to be seen. I assume a lot of people would still rather buy the lens from the manufacturer instead of having a lens rehoused. Hey, it's all about choices ;) and at least they came down from the original $10K or what was it?

Played with one of these at IBC - covers Dragon as you'd expect. Feels quite lightly built, mechanics felt reasonable if a little 'dry'. Image seemed decently sharp and straightforward.

Their 50-135 T3 didn't cover dragon by a long way though...

On top of that, the Tokina in-house cine version has had an optical redesign. It has more aspherical elements and more super-low dispersion glass than the photo version. Whether that makes much of a difference, we'll have to wait and see.
