Hi,

having an issue, possibly I'm missing a setting somewhere...

I exporting from RCX to JPEG (using my custom preset) and applying a crop to the original frame.

Problem is that the cropped area is not removed from the image, it is just adjusted to black. So the actual frame size (pixel resolution) does not change, just the cropped pixels are now black in the JPEG image.

I've tried exporting using my custom JPEG preset directly, and also using that JPEG preset as the snapshot preset.

On a side note, when I export a cropped frame using the default TIFF snapshot, everything works as expected.

Is this a bug or am I missing somewhere ?

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Snapshot in RCX is designed to give you the exact crop area. Ie, crop area = output resolution. When exporting through a preset, your output resolution is what you set in the preset, regardless of crop. So depending on your crop/fit settings you'll have letter/pillar box or none at all if you maintain aspect ratio. Does this help? Please let me know if I have misunderstood your question.

Cheers,
David

David,

thank you for your answer. I think you did understand my question correctly and I can re-create what you explained in RCX.

Here's the problem: I want to export to JPEG, but JUST the cropped area. Clearly I cannot use that by using a custom preset, as that will (as us explained) only use whatever output resolution I set within the preset setup. Since there is no setting for "crop", I use "clip", which again (as per my first post) creates an original pixel resolution sized JPEG with all cropped pixels in black.

Now, if I use that JPEG preset as the snapshot preset under Edit > Preferences > Snapshot, one could hope that the logic u explained kicks in, in that the sw does in fact export just the cropped area. Unfortunately it does not, it does the exact same thing as using the custom export preset directly.

So - it appears - as of right now, once can only export with a crop if one uses the snapshot tool with either TIFF or DPX... is that correct ?

Or is there any way I can export to JPEG, just the cropped area ?

Thanks !

Mike,

Thats correct. Currently you can only export to the crop dimensions if you use snapshot, or specify the crop dimensions as an output resolution in your export preset.

However for the next update I'm going to add "Crop" as an export preset output resolution option and also add JPEG as a snapshot option.

Cheers,
David

David,

yes, I was able to re-create what you explained. If you set a custom preset to exactly the crop size it will just export the cropped area, not matter how you position the crop frame.

A good workaround for now, if you add JPEG as a snapshot resolution even better !

Thanks !

Has this been updated to date?

Ive only had luck with individual clips as far as setting a crop of e.g. 2:35:1.

Cant I just set a mass export with that crop?

Or better yet an overlay of the safe zone of the crop for dailies?
