Hello all, i'm the new owner of a red one mx (Pl and nikon mount), but i don't have batteries and lenses yet, i want some advices..

I'm looking for a lens with a good optical quality ( color rendition, contrast, sharpness) and for my budget ( 1500 euros, 2k$), i don't have a lot of choices, so, i'm hesitating between these ones :

-Zeiss zf2, 35mm f 1.4 (the good point is the f1.4 aperture, which is really important because i'm planning to shoot on night, the problem is the 1,5 crop factor, which will make it a 52mm lens, a focal that i really don't like)

-Zeiss zf2, 25mm f2, a good focal which will become a 37mm lens, but the problem is the f.stop, f2 is not fast enough for what i'm planning to do, maybe am i wrong?

Lomo super speeds, but pretty difficult to find in my area (I live in Paris, France)

What do you guys think? The 35mm 1.4 is a better choice than the 25mm f2 ? Is it possible to change the aspect ration "in camera" in order to have a wider image ? The 4,5k allows a better crop factor (1,49x), but still don't enough..

How about the low lights capabilities of the red one mx? Is it possible to shoot on night with a 25mm f2 ?

The Dilemma is this one: Aperture vs Field of view, i guess that i'll choose the 35mm 1.4, and will deal with crop factor problem, what do you guys think?

Hey Mendes,

Sounds like you've made up your mind about the lenses. I personally would chose a 50 over a 35 but honestly neither is best without the other. I guess the 35 would fit more scenarios.
As for low light, the red one MX is clean at 800iso so long as you expose your scene properly and correct your blacks and mids later in post with a nice curve. Your 35 at F1.4 won't look very nice wide open so you'd have to stop down to at least F2 anyway and at 800iso you're running very close to not being able to shoot super clean low light scenes.

Neat video is always an option though, check out my blog where I've got examples and tutorials showing how iv cleaned a 3200iso scene, selectively. www.mattscottvisuals.com

Cheers :)

If you want spherical lomos just look out for them in the for sale section. You commonly see standard speeds for sale in PL mount.

For a budget set these lenses will do the job. Not the best but at least you get a more "complete" set to shoot with. Use them, abuse them, save up money and upgrade later. One or two lenses Will Not cut it... Add a Sigma 50mm 1.4 and you have all your bases covered : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sigma-EX-50-mm-F-1-4-DG-HSM-EX-Lens-For-Canon-/261283003220?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item3cd5ae3b54

These lenses are also available in Nikon mount. For a $2,000 budget, you can get all of those lenses I linked. Pretty good deal.

As far as shooting t2 at night, I shot at t2.8 at night on the MX with no issues (the zoom was a max t2.8). But I do light... No noise reduction.

Thanks for your replis all!

@Matthew, i saw your neat video tutorial, pretty impressive.. I'm gonna buy the Zeiss 25mm f2 and in a month or two, i'll buy the Zeiss 85mm 1.4..

@Michael, there's not Lomo lens for sale in my area, and i prefer to buy them face to face, but thanks!

@Matt, Rokinon lenses are really appealing by their low prices, but the Zeiss look is more "sexy", and i prefer to have one Beautiful lens, more than an entire set but less good..

Have a nice day all!

I would recommend taking your camera to a photo store selling the Zeiss and Rokinon and test them side by side. 24 1.4 vs 25 2, and 35 1.4 vs 35 1.4 just to get a taste of what these are like.

I would probably buy the Zeiss ZF 100mm macro over of the 85mm. It gives you two lenses in one.

I own a LOMO kit, I know you cant find any in your area, but they are just fantastic lenses. I'd say soon as you see some SNATCH them up. They are killer

I have the Lomo OKC kit, and the 75mm f2 is one of the prettiest looking looks I have seen, I'm also partial to my 80mm Mamiya lens but that's a different story.

Here's some shots for ya I shot on my LOMOs
