You may have seen Adobes internally distributed video on the Beta integration of RED into Premier http://mbsdirect.com/redone/
The work flow is very impressive (although Dave looks baked FHA to me) and leaves all the other players for dead.
So what are Apple and Avid going to do about this?
Do you think they are concerned? that because of this vastly better workflow (those of us shooting RED) have to really consider going across to Premier.

On the surface this looks like a master stroke on Adobes part. I for one am uncomfortable with Premier, but the workflow is so vastly superior (particularly in terms of time) than any of the others I suspect I will have no choice, but to make that decision. I suppose in a way it is no less painful then the one I made to move from my beloved Avids to FCP, its the same moment but different reasons.

Lets take Apple first.
They have already invested a considerable time and money in partnering with RED.
Because of that, one would have expected something like this from them first, when the SDK was announced, sort of "thanks chaps, heres you bonus knock yourself out", but no not a peep from Apple.
So they are either about to announce something that leaps over Adobe in spectacular fashion or they are done with ProApps. Its a bit of a litmus test on their intentions if you like.
So what could their spectacular announcement be?
How about an exclusive GPU card that has hardware 4K debayering on the fly, with display to a 4K 40 inch display.

So to Avid
They will attempt to protect their Hi end boxes so they will want to bake in the .R3D into one of their resolutions. If they persist with that position that excludes them from this discussion as the time overhead in the transcode and the complicated way back to the RAW file is impracticable as it is now.

If Avid offered the same functionallity as Adobe and FCP continued to ignore ProApps I would change back to Avid "in a heart beat"

So who is to be? that takes over the RED world, right now it looks like, Adobe, Premier has just gone big time and is about to play with with the "Big Boys" Apple and Avid the clock is ticking.

It's a tough one since FCP is completely QT based, it can't just speak to anything like Premier can. Still, maybe they have something big up their sleeve?

What you can expect from Apple is "probably" newer machine with Nehalem processor (maybe) and the upcoming R3D for Color support. As FCP workflow, i'm afraid it will be as it is.....they have done nothing with the RED, very little achievement. The only thing excite us is probably last year when the support for FCP was announced, and after that this year "maybe" color support..God knows what is happening with them.

Yeah, if I could go from reference files in FCP to R3D in Color with one click, I could make that work no problem.

I work in FCS and have always liked it, but I also work in Creative Suite and have for quite a long time. I have always admired how years ago Adobe began to make the various products integrate with one another and I'm guessing that Premier will be similar. I could easily switch between FCS and Premier if this is going to become another Pagemaker/InDesign vs QuarkXpress war. Competition is a good thing for us. Hope it lights a fire over at Apple. Oh wait, that just happened. Maybe they ARE on it after all.

LOL.. I swing both ways.. Apple and Adobe. I've found Adobe's software more reliable, Apple's more cutting edge. Ultimately to get something done good and quick I've been pleased with Adobe more often. Shake and Color are awesome apps though... Wish I could have my cake and eat it too!

You did see that ASSIMILATE announced a partnership with Adobe on RED workflow, yes?

Stay tuned... ;)

Lucas

Lucas,
I did see this and it's awesome, but there are some projects that for deadline and budget reasons can't make it onto a Scratch system. I'd like to see a reasonable 1080P/2K solution for the desktop that could preferably integrate as a plug-in or an integrated App (Like Color, but less buggy). Unless I'm misunderstanding the press release and a Scratch seat is now coming as part of CS4:w00t:

Wouldn't that be interesting. I wonder how that would be managed on a Mac

all i know is.. i can NOT afford a scratch system... nore will i ever be able to.. (im a shooter not a post guy), but I would love a great coloring tool to use for my own personal things... I am reallllllllyyyyyyy considering building a magical PC to do my post now.. do it through adobe..
I wish you could just color a tiff in photoshop.. and save the parameters and load them into premier and VIOLA.. instant amazing grading.

You can save your photoshop grade as an action and then batch process your TIFF sequence. It takes forever, but it's possible.

As crazy as it seems it looks from the outside that apple sweet talked red to get her into bed and after the deed was done apple managed to keep red smitten for over a year even though apple never called again. It's nice to see red is on the dating market again hopefully she gets treated better by others.

Story of my life as well.

Yeah. Hopefully, Scratch/Adobe means something other than you have to have a $20k+ investment before you can take advantage of that partnership. If it's a reasonable licensing thing that brings Scratch into the Adobe Video Suite then we'd really have something.

Hopefully there is some one at Scratch to answer the phone when you need to unlock your $20,000.00 software with no curves.

Everyone is at IBC and no one returned calls.

Nothing like to doing a Scratch demo when your Scratch system displayed an Invalid License that you can't fix, and no body to answer the phone.

Somewhere I have read, that Apple sold over 1 million FCP apps worldwide, (200'000 last year), they have 42% of the american market (AVID 23%?). Not to forget all guys out there, who are using FCP illegal (this is the future market ;-). So, APPLE has a good reason, to announce something breaking through in the next month (normally in January I guess?) If not, APPLE will loose a lot of good paying customers in this special market.
