Here's a music video I recently shot for Talib Kweli for his new single, "Human Mic." I exposed all the theatre stuff at around a f2 or 2.8 @ 320 ISO. Recorded 1080 pro res files onto my Hyperdeck Shuttle with lookaround enabled which allowed me to record the 5k field of view.

Thanks for watching,
Mike

You mean bypassed scarlet raw and record as 1080p prores 422. Sorry for my dumb question. How about the audio setup? I watched it like a hawke so I did miss a bit! I like it.

Nice did you shoot the in 5k enabled mode with the Hyperdeck?

Hi Donnie,

Yeah I enabled look around on my Scarlet and recorded the 5k field of view. Makes a big difference.

Thanks for watching,
Mike

That's right, I decided to only record 1080p pro res 422. It gave the editor a nice and easy workflow and it allowed me to record the 5k field of view. I used a $13 Olympus button mic as a scratch track. Works great for what it is: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=496661&is=REG&A=details&Q=

So no need for red colour science and curve treatment? Pretty sharp to me. What lens was used? Well there're many ways to skin a cat. Yeah for what it is, the mic sure did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

Ricky, I baked in Red Gamma 3 to the pro res files in an effort to create a nice looking image in camera. I didn't sit with the colorist, but I think he just enhanced what I shot a bit. The pro res files are extremely sharp coming off the Black Magic Hyperdeck Shuttle. Sometimes it's refreshing to have super nice looking 1080 pro res files ready to go and not bother with the hassle of editing native 4k/5k files or transcoding when you don't own a Rocket.

I shot this with my set of Lomo/Ekran Superspeeds (28, 35, 50 and 75mm) at around a 2 or 2.8. They are a bit soft wide open, but once you stop down to 2 or more they become very sharp as far as I'm concerned. I love the Lomo look, they create really organic images.

that's explains why a lot of RU talk about Lomo. Seriously i like the colour and sharpness. I am still trying out and learn applying colour to my red clips.
Just managed to shoot some clips and learning to 'bake' it (borrowing your word here) and not sure how it should look. I guess some expert eyes would be the judge of that. I use AllStar mounting with Nikon 24-85mm f3.5 (poor man's lens) salvages from my D800E. (Somehow I feel its rather soft on Epic). Guess am still undecided on which way to go PL, Nikon Ti or what. I will try to post tiff here for your comment. But I hae a question for you though. If you have to choose just one lens and one only (not brand) which would it be? 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 100mm?

;)

Hey All,

I was actually the colorist on this project, and while I love having full r3d data available to manipulate, this worked out pretty well. That said if you want an all prores workflow and there is a plan to go to color, RedLogFilm would give me a bit more flexibility.

Hey Alan!

How's it going man? I didn't know you were on these forums. Had I known that R.A. was going to hire a real colorist for all of these music videos, then I definitely would have shot r3d. I just figured he would have immediately transcoded them to 1080 and not relinked at the end...oh well, now I know for next time.

By the way, you did a kick ass job with the Brother Ali video (which I think comes out today). Again, sorry it wasn't r3d, but I liked what you did with the grain. Which plugin did you use?

Hope to meet ya at some point,
Mike

Hi Ricky, well when you're shooting raw you're not baking anything in really. That's whats so nice about r3d. With the AllStar mount you have loads of options with which lens mount to go with. The ones that stand out to me are: Nikon, Zeiss Contax, M42, OCT-19 and PL. Check out Nick's advice on Contax glass in the Lens Section. I also really love M42 Screwmount lenses: I have the Helios 58mm, a handful of Super Takumar lenses, and the Vivitar 90mm f2.5 macro all in M42 mount. This was a standard mount for Russian glass, so there's loads of weird stuff out there. I was looking at keh.com last night and couldn't believe how dirt cheap their Super Tak glass is. If you want real cine glass, you're cheapest option as far as I know would be getting some inexpensive OCT-19 Lomos. You'll find these up for sale on the 3rd Party FS section pretty regularly and there are a couple of very reputable Russian dealers you could buy from. If you want a PL set, then the cheapest route would be to buy Lomos that have been converted from OCT-19 to PL.

If I could only have one lens I'd probably go with a very fast 35mm lens.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Hey Mike,

Yeah it seems RA and I have a good thing going!

We graded in Davinci Resolve and then for the Ali video, we laid in some vintage grain samples for some of the gangster shots.

Cheers,
-Alan

Really good job on that video clip, may i ask you what do you thing about zeiss zf2 lenses? is it as good as a lomo lens? Or better maybe? I 'm the new owner of a red one mx, but i have no lenses on it yet (Pl and Nikon mount), i'm hesitating between a zeiss 25mm f2 and a 35mm f1.4, the problem is the crop factor, a 35mm will become a 52mm which is a focal that i really don't like, but it has the f1.4 so..

Again, really well done..

Hey Donnie,

If your final output is 1080, then there would be no difference in quality. In fact, your images may be even cleaner coming off the Hyperdeck. Editing the 4k files would allow you to punch in though.

Mike

I was considering getting the Hyperdeck Shuttle since I mainly shoot music videos and output 1080p. Is there an obvious difference in image quality vs shooting 4k raw in your opinion?

Thanks Mendes. I own a ZF 85mm 1.4 and I would say that while the ZFs are sharper, the Lomos have more character, and that's what I'm after. The ZF 35mm f1.4 is probably the most impressive ZF I've used, in terms of build and image quality. If I were starting from scratch, I would probably invest in a set of Contax Zeiss or Nikons. They have more character than the ZFs and are cheaper.
