My editor and I have been trying to export a decent looking quicktime out of Avid but we've been having a lot of trouble. Every codec we've tried so far puts this white noise looking mask on top of the picture and all of the colors looked washed out. The project is setup in 1080p.

We are just trying to export a quicktime that will look good on a DVD.
Can anyone suggest a codec or a specific workflow to use?

Thanks,

Are you exporting out "same as source"? when using the QuickTime reference out? Also, may encoders assume the 709 signal to be full range as in 0-255 whereas you may be working in SMPTE 16-235 for broadcast in Media Composer. What are your settings in Media Composer for export: RGB or 601/709? Try QT reference at RGB and see if that fixes things. Also, if using Sorenson, there is a check box in the options where you can indicate that the sources is 16-235.

We tried exporting same as source and we encountered the same problem. It shouldn't have crushed the colors as much as it did. Our settings were 601/709. I'll try RGB and see what happens.

RGB will crush them even more. This begs the question as to what the levels were when you first brought them in; full range or SMPTE constrained, and what happened during color correction (if any was done).

There are several QUickTime to MPEG2 converters on the market with varying levels of quality. Most DVD authoring programs will also have their internal encoding if desired.
