  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shut up and shoot that RED (NSFW)

Anyone noticed how nicely the MX sensor can render motion blur?

I was going frame by frame through some (really crappy) footage the other day and was impressed by how painterly it looked, and by how much the motion blur transformed the appearance of the subject. Thought it might be of interest to some here.

Nice thread btw Gunleik. Have been following it from the start and always liked the originating sentiment of stop complaining and go shoot something with these amazing camera's. Is good to look in here every once in a while too just to see how you're going with the old geek vs. artist battle. I think a lot of us can relate to that, even if we haven't gone into it to the same extent you have.

Can't honestly say I like all the images you've posted, but, so what, that's just me. I liked your Chinese street photography and thought it was a nice change of pace from your studio work, would like to see more people posting images like that.

Anyway, yes, even with the Dragons on the horizon, all it takes is shutting up and going shooting something to be reminded there's really very little to complain about when it comes to the image quality of these camera's. In fact, going by what I've seen lately, it's highly likely people are shooting more amazing images than they will even take the time to notice.

THX Les.

I don't expect everyone to like what I do, and it is just me fooling around with personal stuff I am working on that mostly gets posted to this thread
Kinda figured at a point when I had found out how to reverse engineer matrixes and was about to set out to do that, that I was a bit on the wrong path...
Compared to what I wanted to achieve,,, ;)

First hunch sorta came with the Alexa test, that gained some interest, but I understood that very few actually understood what I wrote or took the time to check my findings. They were only looking for conclusions to bash and not tools to control their imagery. And I made un-friends at REDs and Arri, and absurd (to me) situations rose.
And I was thinking that:
Gee. OK I gain some tech standing through this, but so what the fuck.
I did it to learn and for a specific setting (which I was all open about) and it was taken like I made huge conclusions. WHile I felt they were pretty modest, and I left out all I felt was "hunches" at the time.

BUT
THAT was not why I got into imagery and storytelling... :)

There are a few of the projects in here that has become more pronounced and will end up as something.
I am happy for that.

And projects I have been working on the last few years for myself and others have done rather ok in our little pond up here.
I am gratefull for that too.

But focusing on what I can do with what I have, instead of what I maybe could have done with what I maybe could have had, has made life a bit more productive in directions I want to go.

THAT does not mean that I think people in general should appreachiate my images.
They can if they do, it is fine and sometimes even to me, understandable if they don't.

But I see that my abilities have become more focused working that way.

And to me, that is good.

Thanks for the kind words!

G

I really like your shots. Personally I am more of a motion guy then a still guy, but I am very impressed. You do wonderfully sensual nude shots that I was really amazed with and have been following the thread pretty consistently since. Please keep sharing!

LOL

I work mostly with motion, too... :)

BUT I use the stills to work on other things. ANd it's cool with things with quick turnaround compared to the longer projects I am involved with (and from which nothing is posted here... :) )

But THX!

Really appreciate that.

There will be a bit more coming this fall...

Pity about the negativity surrounding your past tech efforts, but I guess it was all for the best if it was part of your getting to a better place. Good to know you're keeping busy elsewhere while still finding time to play with the imagery you're sharing here. Thanks for the pics. Catch you 'round.

Picking shots for an exhibition here...

Possibly posted before, but I love this frame

THX Brice.

i have never had serious issues with skintones or highlights on the REDs...
Dunno why.

Shot a Canon D60 the other day, though... :)

I guess it comes down to what you are used with...

got the chance to exhibit some of the images and did my first large size printouts.

geee

the smoothness of these images transform so well in print that it is close to.... well... what i expected, but my expectations were high and got more than fullfilled...

creamy highlight rolloffs, smoothness into black.

this is like an old single cask...

once more just incredibly impressed with the tech i am allowed to employ...

These 4 shots are around 1600 ISO with old Jena glass.

really dig how the glass contributes to the "old filmic" feel to them, in the way they bleed in the highlights, do not get masterprime sharp, treats skin and fall off from center.

Love them in high contrast situations like these...

Old Jena glass is SINGLE COATED...which means the glass is very clean, and very forgiving with highlights. Of course the tradeoff is also lower contrast (which I like!), and much more flaring (which can be good too!).

More 80mm Jena...

Wow. Stunning picture.

While I'm here, have you got any pictures of your exhibition Gunleik? I think it'd be cool to see images of your work presented in the context of a gallery or exhibition space. Can't recall seeing anyone showing such a thing with their RED generated work before.

This exhibition is a year away.

Did some large scale prints last week, though. Just for a test.

Worked ok.

(Sorry... OK is an understatement... I do a few of those...)

Yup.

Would be fun to shoot one piece with different exposure-goals and glass.

I must try that one day!

Clash of visual worlds.

I really love shooting masters, too....

As much as I love my old grainy angie.
