Hi everyone,

I know this have been discussed before but anyway :
Considering RED first announced that the Scarlet will do ANA mode (that was one of the reason i ordered it!), do you think one day they will have the courtesy to enable it ?
I can even tell you that when i asked Alan at RED EUROPE about it, he didn't realized that that mode don't exist on the Scarlet.

I know it's a commercial matter but i think it's time.

Cheers

A $9500 upgrade for anamorphic isn't all that enticing (that is to say, it'd be foolish to get a Dragon for just ana).

I kind of agree with Cedric... it's kind of frustrating. The pal framerates more so, but it'd be nice to know if RED is basically going to ditch Scarlet-MX development as soon as Dragon arrives. 4k ANA, 4.5k WS, that pseudo-HDRx 4k mode, 3k-HDRx at 25, 3k at 50p, etc; are these no longer a possibility on Scarlet-X? I hope "Get a Scarlet Dragon" is NOT the official answer to those questions...

Conversely, Jarred said it's easier to enable columns than it is to enable rows, so it would seem 4.5k WS would be easier than 4k (or 5k) ANA on Scarlet-X.

Yes I hope scarlet does not get left in the dust but to be honest I think we have seen all that we will see from the camera and be urged to go dragon for more functionality

The thing i don't really get is, why people get frustrated over those things. RED has delivered what they promised when they introduced the Scarlet. There things that have been requested since the beginning (more fps, more resolutions), but RED actually never really made promises on those things. There was talk about that new HDRx-compression, but without promises and a big question mark behind it. I guess it isn't ready or just didn't work out, priorities are on different things currently, thats for sure.

I understand the request for 50p and 4.5k or more WS-modes with more fps, i ask the same questions, i would love to have these, don't get me wrong here. I'm just not getting frustrated over those things and don't feel the need to repeat those requests again and again.

RED knows, if they can, they will. They might have their focus on getting Dragons to fly, but i don't think they'll instantly drop development on MX-cameras once those are ready. It wouldn't make sense- They're still selling MX-cameras and there are many of them out in the wild, not all of them will be upgraded soon or upgraded at all. Stopping support for all those right now doesn't fit into the image of RED, you should have learnd that. I know that fear, because every other company works that way. ;)

Maybe we will get that custom resolution thing for MX too and thats why it's taking so long?

I think at this point we are getting nothing else... the RED ONE basically was EOL once the Epic hit. That is fine it was everything they promised. So is the Scarlet. I do wish they would get the 50p happening in 3k and the HDRx in 4k. I don't see it happening though. It would be really great if they could give us 50p in the Scarlet @ 4k, 60fps @ 5k for Scarlet - D, and whatever it lands at fps wise for Epic- D in 6k. This isn't going to happen but... it would be great cause that point all of Red cameras still available for purchase would be capable of slomo @ 4k or greater without sacrificing any quality.

I don't think the situation is the same. Dragon EPiC/Scarlet aren't totally new cameras, they'll probably share a good portion of the OS with the MX-versions.

You should better look how RED has handled the RED One with the original Mysterium Sensor after they started to upgrade the One to MX. Thats way more like the situation is now.

sorry

sorry

And thanks for letting everyone know what a dumb-ass I am...:confused5:

That wasn't my intention !!!
Alan you are always very helpful and professional !
It was at the very beginning and what i mean is you "naturally" thought it was activated .

Don't get me wrong! i love red cameras and the ways they care about customers (on of the first user in france)

But in this very particular case, you can check old documents about that, Ana was announced. And everybody know that it's not a technical limit like the frame rates are.

scuse my poor english

Jarred never really answered on that point if i'm not wrong

I don't have the 9500$ but i have a Scarlet

sorry again Alan

Correct me if I am wrong. But can't you just shoot anamorphic and starch the footage in post. Your only obstacle is viewing the shoot in camera in the right ratio.

Asking for anamorphic support is anyhow a bit odd in my humble opinion. For once anamorphic lenses are a commodity that is pricy. If anyone can afford those they can afford an Epic, buy or rent. Besides the fact that digital cine cameras like Scarlet have plenty of resolution where squeezing your image voluntarily seems a redundant solution. It's like putting windshield wipers on a horse carriage.

Not agree of course !
It's actually a question of money.
I can use the Kowa set of a friend and desqueeze capable monitors are expensive.

Of course you can do it anyway but it's not easy.
As i said before, everybody know it's only a function to implement in the firmware.

I have to admit I am just as surprised that its not part of the current features on the Scarlet. Of course I am a bit biased as I trade my Scarlet for an Epic and didn't look back since. Good luck Cédric, I hope RED hears your call.

Even a SmallHD DP4 can de-squeeze via it's CustomScale function. I wouldn't call that expensive. ;) You can probably rent or loan such a monitor too.

Of course you can do it anyway but it's not easy.
Shooting without a de-squeezing monitor might not be pretty, but it's possible.
Sure, you have to do some more steps in post, but the hardest task for most poeple would be getting their hands on good anamorphic glass. You got that covered, so try to get creative with them and don't stop here. ;)

As i said before, everybody know it's only a function to implement in the firmware.
Actually, we don't really know it's just a simple "switch" that has been turned off to only protect EPIC and RED Ones. Thats what most people assume and speculate about, but on the opposite there are statements from RED, where they said that Scarlet is limited by hardware (no, it's not just raw computing power, there are more differences).

Speculating about that doesn't help anyone, RED probably isn't going to enable this tomorrow, there has been talk about that feature since Scarlet-X got announced, even more after it got shipped. And honestly i'm even not sure about anamorphic ever being part of Scarlet-X's official spec-list.

I suggest to not get frustrated and try to work around, anamorphic isn't impossible, just not that easy/pretty as with EPIC or a R1.

Oh and don't forget to blow us away with some footage if you get it working. ;)
