  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do I "RE-LOAD" a Clip BACK into a Scarlet SSD Card via the PC ??

I am trying to take a clip, originally shot on our Scarlet Camera, and "re-load" it back into an SSD card from our Windows7 PC. Then, I want to play it back on the Scarlet camera's monitor. I am starting out with a blank SSD Card that has nothing on it but the next "empty" file. I see no reason why this should not work.

I have tried this several times in different ways, and the camera will NOT "see" the file and play it.

Once, I even tried deleting ALL the files on the SSD card, but then I could not even format it in the camera. So, I had to re-load those files into the card via the computer. Then the camera saw the card and was able to format it.

Does anyone have any idea how I can accomplish this, or what I am doing wrong?

We MUST be able to view a previously shot clip to do a special effect we are planning on.

Thanks for your time.

The reason why I'm guessing this isn't working is because reloading the clip alone isn't enough. I'd guess that when the camera records it also is recording pointers to tell the brain where the clip is. I'm not sure if you can reload pointers into the card. When you copied the clips, did you just copy the clip alone, or the entire card with all the other files.
Out of curiosity, is it absolutely necessary the file be viewable on Red's monitor. Perhaps you could simply do a proxy export and load it onto your mobile or something.

Thanks for your help.

I copied the file containing the clip, and yes, it is ABSOLUTELY necessary that we are able to achieve this so that it can be viewed in exactly the same monitor through exactly the same camera.

Thanks again.

Maybe if you would record a new clip with the exact lenght and also rest of parameters fitting, you could then replace that clip with your old clip on the SSD. Of course filesize would be different.

If for whatever reason copying the files back onto the card doesn't work, and you don't want to do a composite fx, you can record the clip by playing off your computer monitor. not the best quality but I suspect it may be good enough.

To put a clip back on the camera, the SSD must be formatted with the matching name and you need the proper directory structure and companion XML files. Even then it's no guarantee that it will work due to the sequential data requirements for data on the card.

May I inquire as to why you need to do this?

Sounds like you are trying to recreate framing for a composite shot. If so, the easiest way is to take the live HD-SDI feed from the camera and mix/overlay using Q-Take or other software/hardware mixer with a frame grab from the previously shot clip.

If not, please clarify exactly what you are trying to achieve.

Thanks for your help Jeff, but I've been experimenting, and I think I've found a way to make it work.

And, no, sorry, but what we're doing is a secret. There are, and have always been, secrets in the Special Visual Effects trade. ;) It's not a big one, but one nevertheless.

Take care,

Hey George, Here's how you do it.
Format the REDMag card in camera, then record 1 clip of whatever, then eject the SSD from the Camera.
Next, mount the REDMag on your computer, then copy the entire RDC folder containing your desired clip into the SSD inside the RDM folder.
Just tried this with 10 clips that are months old, they all play fine on the camera.
Hope it helps, Jeff

Anyone, a hypothetical question, do you think the following would work?: grade clips in RedCine-X, save RMDs. Load the clips unto a mag and play them out from the camera unto a BlackMagic Hyperdeck shuttle via SDI recording AppleProRes HQ clips... Would this have the same quality as doing a full debayer in RedCine-X and rendering Apple Pro Res HQ clips?

Yeah you could do that. The debayer quality in camera is pretty nice actually.
