Hi all, I'll be traveling across country (Los Angeles to New York) for the first time to work on a feature.
What is the best way to travel with a Yeager Sr. cart and it's accessories. I'll also be traveling with a Cinebag, a Panavison Bag, and a Husky Bag.

Are there any restrictions with traveling with some expendables, like canned air, or knives?

Are they any specific airlines that are "Filmmaker Gear Friendly" that you have come across?

Thanks!!

Hi Jessyca,

As far as I know, you can ship the Yeager as luggage though I'm sure you'll end up paying excess baggage fees. Where are you going to park your cart in NYC though? Will you have your own vehicle for the duration of the shoot? Most AC's there park their carts at Panavision or CSC so it might be easier for production to rent you a cart there.

Production should look into getting a media discount on luggage, they can save a lot of money there. Virgin America is pretty good, I e had bad experiences with Delta and Southwest.

When I fly with my AC gear, I pack light and put everything into a few checked Pelicans. I have a Large Tenba Black Label bag that serves as my general AC bag since it'll fit a slate and charts, and fits under an airline seat (I once stripped a Red One body and carried it on in the Tenba bag). I've found a soft Kino Barfly bag fits perfectly into a 1560 rolling case (I think, I'll check when i get home) which is enough for my belt and a few tools. Definitely don't try to carry on your Leatherman or air cans, pack it in checked luggage.

Don't forget to read up on travel restrictions for batteries, keep them under 100wH and don't check them. I always tape off the contacts with electrical tape and put them in individual zip locks. You may have to pass them out to other crew members to get under the restrictions. Get production to purchase all your expendables in NYC, don't try to fly with them. B&H has pretty much everything you'll need.
