  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After a year of bitching about it, Ive moved to the dark side.

I have edited a project that had 30+ hrs of footage in FCP X, no problems as long as you have a descent mac and hard drive.

Would anyone edit a massive project with 30 plus hours of footage? Maybe even as much as 90-100hrs of footage?

Actually, it's really made for that kind of project because of the powerful databasing and keywording features.

David

Congrats Mark. I did the same. However, be very careful on the backup of projects, and make sure you back them up not only with project copy but also with "consolidate clip media", or you'll end up with a project whose files are mere shortcuts to originals.

Also, had a problem with a project getting corrupted and not opening at all, making FCPX not even working. The problem was solved with me copying literally the FCP Events and Projects folders to another drive. Something about automatic indexing that caused a corruption. As long as one is aware of these issues, the editing side is smooth. Looking forward to the update, and am migrating to it!

I have had complex projects get bogged down in the way that Phil Johnson describes. I had many nested sequences in there that I suspected were to blame. Nested sequences have always been a challenge in Final Cut. This article is the first I have heard of the Project Repair Tool. I will check it out, thanks for the link.

How much complexity is too much? is a legitimate question. I have only encountered the problem two times myself, and both times involved sequences nested 3+ deep. It is possible that the problem begins and ends there FAIK.

As a side note, both of my problem sequences were also less than 30 minutes in length, FWIW.

It is worth noting that while Hodgett's Event Manager can be useful it is far from necessary. I don't want to call Mr. Johnson's level of expertise into question, but if he is not aware that you can manually move a problem project or event out of their respective folders at the finder level then I do have take his alarm bell ringing with a grain of salt.

No David, I'd call that marketing.

That's funny Liam, but are you saying that the environment at Radical Media is not professional?

Not to derail the topic but has anyone used FCPX 10.0.8 with a ROCKET in FULL DEBAYER and had playback issues?

Works great in HALF but FULL not so much.

full doesn't really happen in rcx much either at 5k with a rocket installed.

Thats cool Paul,

but you are a feature film Hollywood guy, don't you still edit in reels, limiting your timelines to no more than about 21 minutes? As in one reel of film? As in hitting story beats within reels?

i always cut in reels as a best practice so I never build these behemoth timelines. And that has served me well in avoiding such problems.

How many times have I broken an AVID sequence into smaller chunks to edit to tape? Many.

Ive had success and epic fails with every NLE software and I can tell you that any piece of software can be given too much to do, from a CPU and GpU standpoint.

every film should be in its smaller bits only until you outpu and everything is rendered. That's not a software issue, that's a bad planning by the editor issue.

The Rocket won't actually help you with playback in FCPX regardless of whether playback is set to "Better Quality" or "Better Performance" there. The Rocket will only be useful for rendering and export.

As far as RED performance, you should get at least 2 streams of full R3D playback in better performance over thunderbolt with or without a Rocket, and at least 1 stream over ESata. You should not get any real time playback regardless of what setup you have if your playback is set to "Better Quality".

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that these playback settings have no effect on export with RED media, which will always be at a full debayer.

Anyway, great to see the community finally waking up to all of the work Apple has been putting into FCPX. For those looking for some free resources, I've put together a bunch that may be of interest, which I'll consolidate here:

FCPX App and Plugins Roundup - http://www.moviemaker.com/articles/fcpx-plugins-and-apps-roundup/

P.S - A couple plugins I forgot to include with that last article - Neat Video for Noise Reduction (be warned, Render times are SLOW with 4k), and Izotope RX, which now works within FCPX, and is a pretty amazing audio tool. Also, I purposely left off the EDL app, as I hate EDL, and want no part in perpetuating it as a tool... but you can do it if you need to from X. Final note on this... this is just the beginning... there are a TON of third party tools for FCPX in development that are going to make your lives a whole lot easier.

There's also my FCPX tutorials page (best ones to watch are RED workflow parts 1 and 2, Davinci Resolve workflow with FCPX, Batch Renaming and Multicam sync, Using Redcine-X Pro to grade your RAW in FCPX, and Audio Component Editing in FCPX): http://themovieswemake.com/tutorials/

Also, if anyone wants my vote on which tutorials you should buy to get you started... Ripple Training makes the best in the business.

And if you're reading this thread, are open to new things, live in LA, and like free donuts, coffee and sandwiches, then come hang out with us at Lumaforge once a month for our regular 4k Unplugged meetup... which is all about building a community around our radically changing post environment (which basically means that we like to talk about Apple, RED, BMD, Thunderbolt, 4k monitors and projection).

Anyway, this thread is a long time coming. Glad to see so many of you revisiting FCPX.

Today we have FCP X, Motion and now Logic for $600. The new FCP Studio, if I can call it that is many times more powerful at less than half of the cost. I think Logic X is a boon..

Well, to be fair, in a complete professional environment, where you usually will be collaborating with others, you would also need to include SyncNLink ($200) and X2Pro ($150), at a minimum. So it's close to $1000, which is not much different than FCP Studio 3 was. But I get your point, and yes, it is a nice suite of tools. But I still feel it's more appropriate, and currently designed for, individuals starting and finishing a project on one machine. In other words, it's far more useful for the "one man band" operations than it is for collaborative post environments. That might eventually change, but that's the way it is at this point in its development. And that's not a comment on FCPX's editing capabilities, which are considerable. It is more a comment on its rather closed nature and its rejection (for the most part) of common interchange formats and documents.

Hi Sam. I read some of your articles when I was just starting out with FCP X and they encouraged me in thinking it was worth persisting so cheers.

Yeah, but when it unlinks all your media, is it easy to get back online? I had nightmares in FCP. Also, once you have 3-5000 clips, and 30 timeline FCP would take 5-10 minutes to open. Crashes were painful which happened enough. Never have had a problem in Avid.

Keywording is a major pain. Imagine keywording 5000 clips? And those are the ones you used. I like the option having it but I don't personally use it much. I do keyword bloopers.
