Hi,

looking for recommendations for a blue filter that will be used on Tungsten shoots.

I got these currently on my list:

(1) Schneider CTB 1/8 | 1/4 | 1/2

(2) Schneider Solid Color Sapphire Blue 1 | 2 | 3 Water White Glass Filter

--> it was mentioned that this filter has been adjusted for Red's spectral sensitivity.

(3) Formatt 80 A | B | C | D

Which filter would you recommend and which intensity ?

Thanks !

Mike,

I am not sure you really need these filters assuming you are working with the MX chip? If I am shooting in Tungsten lighting and its a low key scene and I am concerned about noise I rate the camera at 640 or 500asa. The extra exposure on the chip usually sorts out the blue channel noise. This technique of course sacrifices some headroom for the highlights but in most scenarios this is no problem.
The blue filters will also loose you exposure but with no compromise on the highlights. The Format A,B,C,D filters are strong balancing your tungsten all the way to daylight although the D grade may be a reasonable choice. The Schneider Sapphire Blues I am unfamiliar with but are not standard CC filters so you would want to test these. The Schneider CTB 1/4 and 1/2 might be a good choice as they would not loose you too much level but still bring your blue channel exposure up.
I have shot for nearly 5 years with Red cameras without using blue CC filters so I find it hard to recommend them although the result from using them is likely to be positive. I just like skinning my cat other ways.

Or 80D for even less exposure loss...

as per my OP, I'm trying to figure which sensitivity to get...

it appears 80D raises by 1400K while 80C raises by 1700K... so with Tungsten @ 3200K with an 80C you'd get to around 4900K, close to the native 5000K of the MX sensor...

Am I understanding this correctly ? ;-)))

Thanks !
