Anyone can show the major differences between 12 stops of dynamic range (like on the Blackmagic) and show side by side with Red Epic dynamic range? Im curious how major that difference would be in the final film.

sorry for misspelling dynamic... cant edit the title :(

The difference is having an issue with dynamic range vs almost never. In the real world in the Northeast, we almost never need to us HDRX with the 13.5 stops (independently measured my others whom I trust, and by me) Epic gives you "straight up". However, we are often right at the limit. So, in the real world, 13.5 is pretty much the max range you find on real world sets. Less than that, and the real world will throw some curve balls at you, as it often did with previous digital cameras.

Besides - this should be considered a CLAIM of 12 stops. To more fussy standards of what constitutes noise or ugly highlight discoloration, it might well be 10 - BM doesn't exactly aim at the top-end of the market, and their average customer's idea of good enough and mine/yours might be very different. We've yet to see any footage from that cam, nor independent tests. If you just believe their claim you are way more trusting than I am.

Also, there is a huge difference between 4K of recorded resolution, and what this thing can actually resolve cleanly. The current BM does NOT resolve 2K cleanly, and has many issues with aliasiing.

And then there is the fact that no one knows if/when this camera will come out. There are still major delays on their first model of cam as well as manufacturing issues.

i just want to thank everyone for the feedbacks and answers.. this website is amazing.. what a community.
i decided to keep my epic.. despite temporary financial hardship.. Its just too good of a camera.. and still seems unparalleled , i admit the blackmagic 4k tempted me.. but i dont want a to lose the amazing redcode.. thanks guys..

Yes, keep it for redcode. That's honestly the best feature ever, and something that the target user for BM's cameras doesn't understand / appreciate

There are only a couple real world situations that I have exceeded the Scarlet-X's normal dynamic range. One was a waterfall in Hawaii, I could not get some of the foreground shadowy vegetation and the highlights of the bright white water of the fall. The second was refueling military aircraft, going from the boom operator inside the dark aircraft, to the bright outside. Even with HDRx it was still a stretch.

These are the only 2 extreme situations that I have had trouble with the Mystrium-X's dynamic range, and both were in uncontrollable situations. Any (current) camera would have been hard pressed. I know I have pushed the Scarlet's dynamic range more than that, most of the time though it shines through.

The more Dynamic Range you have, the less issues you have with it.

Thanks Christian.. that is really helpful. It would be cool to see some side-by-side jpg with 12 stops dynamic range image and 13 stops.. seeing the visible diferences in bright vs dark..
