  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

G-Tech Evolution

It does look good, but they have added extra stuff that increases costs and potentially adds more things that can break. The EV drive modules are drives in their own enclosures that can be used via USB3 and I think eSATA as well. Two of those slot into the Thunderbolt dock unit.

CalDigit has their VR unit, which is also a 2-drive solution. I like it because you can pull the two trays out the rear and just mount plain HDDs without extra expensive enclosures, which only come with proprietary drives installed, AFAIK. OTOH, CalDigit hasn't released a TB version of the VR just yet, so...

All things considered, this looks like a handy unit to me. However, I like the 2.5" REDSTATION module. I can slot whatever 2.5" media (well, most any drive that's 12mm thick and less). The 960GB OWC SSD's are a pretty cool option and OWC has bulk pricing. ;)

I also like the 1TB hybrid HDDs from Seagate. I think those are my favorite for the $$$.

It's from Drobo. Why would anyone mention it?

I'd rather get kicked in the nuts.

haha yeah Drobo has a bad rep -- esp on Reduser. I have the Drobo S for long term storage but once the pwer kicked out accidentally and I had to rescue everything. I think the new units have a battery built in or something.

On another note. This has me thinking about the longer term strategy -- any clues on longevity of HDD vs SSD?

Ha ha! Jeff, I'm with you until I discovered this product. I never wanted anything to do with them, but his unit has been great.

Yes, built in battery. We actually got the HDD versions. So far, we love it. Robust, fast, etc.

The only thing wrong with it so far is the name on it. ;-)

And Jeff...I know a little something about losing drives. (wink, wink-It's been a year. Still working on that for me?)

oh, right... I hang my head in shame... :(

I'll shoot you an email here in a day or two when I can get a concise answer to go along with the long story and another apology.
