guys

had a great shoot a couple of days ago, marred by quite a few takes having huge volumes of dropped frames (resulting in black frame flashes) - through visual and dialogue scenes. jolly annoying.

as well as these black flashframes all the way thru, i also have this pattern effect. i know this has been discussed and documented, but how do i resolve/get this seen to?

have played back ssd's on camera etc and they seem 'burned on' to the raw footage...

agh, such a shame. generally loving the images the camera produces...

I don't know the history of this problem, so excuse me if I sound uninitiated. Did you get an error while recording? How old are the SSDs? How many hours have been recorded onto them? Running the latest firmware? Was there any unusually hot or cold temperature exposure?

Jason - thanks for the reply,

Whilst actually shooting I didn't notice any issues.
A couple of times I did playback to show the actor their performance, and we noticed glitches, and freezing on some playback takes.
But I didnt really have time to do much about it, so we just pressed on.

Around 90% of the footage throughout the day was recorded seamlessly, so there seems no rhyme nor reason!!
It was a hot day here in London, but lots of takes came out just fine!!!

The ssd's are around a year old. all my gear is pretty much boxfresh.

I'm not running the latest firmware, but as so much of the footage from the same day was ok, I'm just v confused why this would happen so arbitrarily.
Is it a problem with my Scarlet? An inherant problem with the camera?
Or do these glitches and errors just 'happen' sometimes and you have to live with them??

Once, the fan did kick in at full blast to cool the camera.
If the camera is getting up towards that level of heat where the fans switch on fully, could this result in glitches and dropped frames?
I don't feel that i was 'pushing' the camera inordinately...

Thank You

In my experience, this kind of artifacting has only happened twice: once with the R1 and once with the Epic. In both cases, the media and/or media reader was hot. Also, in both cases, I saw the problem and re-downloaded the media in a cooler state and the media transferred to hard drive without problem. The takeaway? Visually inspect all footage possible once transferred to hard drive and don't wipe your media until you have done so. I don't remember how many frames were affected with the R1, but the incident with the Epic happened this past week and only affected one frame, so skimming clips quickly may not reveal the problem. Therefore, when I'm filling the role of DIT/data wrangler on a job, I'm a stickler for visually inspecting all footage in real time.

If Jonnie says that 10% of his media is possibly corrupt he may have a problem. Jonnie, try upgrading the firmware and re-creating the problem, if possible. Nothing about your setup seems unusual other than the heat, which as other folks have already commented, could create this kind of problem. Now you know to keep your gear cool either with flags on set/umbrellas.
