Now that Jarred has posted that it is done... I'd like to offer my take.

The Dragon upgrade to EPIC is as big as it gets. The Dragon sensor skips two generations (maybe three) of sensor development.

Assuming they could actually get here, most companies would demand to make the Dragon a brand new model. Put your old camera in the closet and buy a new camera. The Dragon is that good. Actually, it is hugely better than what others would qualify as good enough to justify a new camera model. But we upgrade. We let you get more from your current EPIC. Obsolescence obsolete. Just as we promised 7 years ago.

The primary improvement to Dragon is dynamic range. Pick a number. It is at least three stops better than the current EPIC which was good enough to shoot "The Hobbit", "The Amazing Spiderman", "The Great Gatsby"... etc. What was great just got a whole bunch better.

Add some resolution. The 5K EPIC-X just became the 6K EPIC Dragon. Why does that matter? Down-rezzing is a great thing to final output. Need to stabilize? How about reposition the frame. Less noise on output. Grab a still from the motion stream and create a billboard. Resolution is your friend. The Dragon has lots of it... actually more than any other motion capture camera. And did I mention dynamic range?

The Dragon is one of those things that is just too big to call evolution. While the other companies are struggling to figure out how to catch up to where we were... the Dragon sensor leaps forward to a territory that others apparently could not ever imagine.

While the Dragon is late... it is worth the wait. Times 10.

This news is nothing short of extraordinary!!!

Thank you RED Teams for making our wildest dreams..possible!!

BRAVO!!!

Congratulations! I guess everyone has a big smile on the face now -- after many month of hard work on it.

Great news.

I hope the Epic "Trade-In" options stays alive for a while. ;o) ...X-Mas at least!?
Thank you very much for the "Obsolescence Obsolete" concept, it is certainly a wonderful offer!

This comment sorta bugs me. It is a soundbite that has been marketed throughout the industry. LightIron and Company3 have easily matched EPIC color (including skin tones) to film and the Alexa.

While our color science has certainly improved with Dragon.. the soundbites you allude to are just flat out inaccurate.

Jim

will it put the skin tone issue to bed. its all anyone seems to want to talk about

Jim,

its not a soundbite from me. it does come up again and again with producers. I'm tired of hearing it. you can tell them until you are blue in the face and they still say well alexa this and that. I mentioned it because it bugs us all

Over 50% of the biggest budget features are shot on RED. That doesn't happen if "color science is off". Soundbites apparently stick... until they don't.

How about this soundbite... anything shot 1080P, 2K or 2.8K is obsolete. Arri just announced that their future is now 4K. Does that mean that everything shot on Alexa is obsolete? Just curious...

Jim

Jim, what's the measured spatial resolution of the 6K dragon ?

Thx

I never had problem with skin tone.... Oh yes, when I was shooting with HDV or H264.

Most skin tone problem is due to wrong use of light VS color matching. IMHO

Anyone with skintone issues on EpicMX simply doesn't know how to properly shoot on the camera. I haven't had an issue with RED skintones since my 3rd job on a RedOneM, when I really figured out my approach that sensor. My handling of Red sensors has carried over from that learning curve and I can't complain.

Nice! Sounds amazing. I'm really looking forward to seeing footage! Particularly side by side with Epic-X so we can really get a clear sense of it.

Is the upgrade price still at $9k?
