Hi community,

this is my first post and i am a RED newbie

i have a mac pro mid 2010 8core, 12GB RAM, and only 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphiccard. i work with FCPx.
because i need much money for my new RED cam i dont wanna buy a new mac pro or an imac (because of the display).
so my question is...what hardware updates are useful to work with REDfiles in fcpX and davinci?
sorry for the bad english.

Hmm...

1) Buy a new GFX card, like the 680 4GB version (you can get one with flashed Mac EFI on eBay).

2) Set up a Raid-0 with four hard-drives in the drive bays (this should become your 'Media' partiton), get a set of 3.5 to 5.25 brackets and put your system disk in the second optical drive.

3 - alternative A) Buy used and cheap from me a set of 32 GB of ram for your 8-core

= finished

3 - alternative B) Buy two X5680 CPU's (http://ark.intel.com/products/47916/), and replace the CPU's.

4 - alternative B) Buy 96 or 48 GB (3 pairs) of 1333 MHz ram.

5 - alternative B) Finish it with a Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD as your system disk.

= finished (a lot more expensive then alternative A, but kick ass computer power)

thanx jon for this fast and helpful answer. i will check the prices. sounds good.

have a nice day

No problem, you could go with alternative A first, and then upgrade to 12-core later (the only part that is wasted are the RAM sticks, thats why I have a set for sale :), then buy SSD, used X5680 (don't buy ES/engernering samples) and 96GB or 48GB 1333MHz ram when/if you want to use more money on the machine later... Thats how I did it with my primary workstation, and it was a good gradual investment.
