So the f-ing enter button is stuck on my side handle. I'm about to go on a trip and was going to pick up a Redmote to solve my enter button troubles (don't use a touch screen) since I'll be long gone before it's repaired and returned. Does the Redmote just attach and work right off the bat, or is a touch screen and/or fully working side handle necessary to set it up?

The firmware of the camera and the redmote needs to match to make it work! You could do this directly with the camera if your buttons were working (or if you had a touch screen) - but since you can also update the redmote firmware over USB on your computer it should work just fine if you do this on your computer. Als long as the camera and redmote firmware matches it should work just fine (attached directly at the back of the brain at least - for pairing it wirelessly you'd also need a working menu so you'd get "stuck" pretty easily upon loosing the pairing).

You can always setup the pairing using the REDmote docked. Also, as of 4.0.x docked REDmotes are automatically paired with the camera.

true, I remember you told us so in one fw-RECON thread but I guess I forgot about it (I don't use the redmote too often to actually control the camera, it's more like a monitoring tool for me [for writing the shot script and take-info during the shoot])...

back with 3.x I often had to dial it in manually after loosing connection or restarting the camera - if that doesn't happen anymore then everything should be all right.

edit: hmm, but isn't stuff like giving the camera a name and such pretty awkward to do just over the docked redmote? I remember that the setup of the pairing (with a custom camera name) took me a while even with the touch LCD -> I know that the cam has a default name in the meantime and stuff with newer firmware but I didn't follow the news regarding that lately.

I realize this may not help you immediately on your shoot, but if you send in the Side Handle to RED, they were very helpful when I had this same exact problem.

If the issue is not firmware related but the button is mechanically grit-locked in its "in" position, time is at a premium and you are prepared to risk voiding your warranty, try unplugging the device, removing its batteries, then with a can of lens spray turned upside-down so that liquid gas comes out, with the little nozzle tube fitted and with eye protection worn by you, with the appliance itself turned upside-down - spray some liquid gas into the gap around the button whilst agitating the button. Hopefully the liquid as it boils off will flush any loose grit or dust and the button will become free. - A desperation measure but sometimes it works on other appliances (Sony PD150). Wick off any moisture attracted by the chilling effect with a tissue. Allow overnight for the moisture attracted by the chilling effect that you cannot get at with the tissue to dry off.

Great to know Jason.

Robert, unfortunately it's used and I still need to send my Scarlet in for transfer of ownership. I assume I'll be paying full price to swap the piece with the enter button regardless (everything else works fine).
