Just wanting feedback on the Red Nikon Mount from people who have used it. I know that the range of electronic lenes you can use with it is very restricted.

What I am particularly interested in is how it works with manual focus lenses. Are there any restrictions here? Can I basically use any Ai or AIS manual focus lens on it?

Cheers

For manual focus lenses I'd suggest OptiTek ProLock as it even does the de-clicking with smooth iris-control for you - we're very happy with our unit.
Anyways - manual focus should never be a problem with non-electronic lenses as it is a lens-thing and not a mount-thing basically so my guess is there are no restrictions on that part.

No personal experience with the RED mount to be honest tho; for real experience others have to chime in here...

Thanks for the feedback. Thanks Roy, good to know.

Peter, I too have the Optitek but unfortunately there may be a problem with using it with the new Red front fan unit so I am having to consider alternatives. I have just received the fan unit and it does not look like it will fit with the Prolock. The issue is the red gear part on the Prolock. Is it possible to remove that?

Oh, I also plan to do the fan-upgrade soon but was not aware of that!
It's always good to know about such stuff -> any words from OptiTek or RED on this issue (it's a RED approved mount after all)?

I think you can remove the red knob tho - but I think it's there to lock/unlock the position of the ring with the aperture reading so I wouldn't do that if not necessary...

Thanks for the info!

Hi Peter,

Yes, it is good to know these things in advance. The new front module really does stick out quite a lot - I am sure that it will render quite a few 15mm LW rod solutions unusable.

I have written to Jacek about it and will let you know what he says.

The part on the Optitek that is problematic is the teethed gear that surrounds the entire mount. I seem to recall that it was optional so perhaps it can be removed? If it can, I think all will be well.

Best

The only odd thing about manual lenses I've seen is that on the 50mm F1.2 Nikkor the aperture lever is really long (there's a normal length lever then a step in and another couple mm)... long enough that it interferes with the mounting of the lens on the Red. I had the extra length of the tab removed and it works fine (maybe it was to support some old camera design, isn't needed on any of the Nikon's I've got).

Thanks David. I have the 50mm 1.2 so that is good to know.

Still hoping that the Optitek can be modified to work with the front fan. Jacek has responded that it is possible to remove the red gear ring that surrounds the Optitek which is causing the interference. However I am still waiting for word about how exactly that would be done - whether it can be done by the user or, god forbid, has to be sent back.

Just in case you have some other fast AI glass, we also could not fit, pretty much all the lenses we especially bought for DSMC use:

20 2.8
24 2.0
35 1.4
50 1.2
55 1.2

There still might be others we did not try.
In addition we did not find a predictable function of the electronic aperture control with our copy of the Nikon mount so we ended up using the Optitec as well.

Cheers, Ulf

Thanks Ulf. I have most of those lenses so the Red Nikon mount is not for me. So good to know these things before buying. Jacek has been very helpful about how the red gear ring on the Optitek can be removed so that the new red front fan will fit so it appears I will be able to stick with the Optitek afterall.

hello.
I use it for some time, the Nikon mount for my father my leave an incredible number of lens, fixed focal, short zoom, zoom, macro will then open a store.
the scarlet I turn only with old lens Angenieux Cooke kynoptic lomo, Belomo new generation in PL mount, doing my upgrade to the epic, I ordered the Nikon mount, trying to me that my father had left .
frankly is a great result with the old lens fully manual qualitee still surprises me.
with a digital lens has a red lens equal to and better than some big brand pro qualitee.
I prepared a series and all fast part steadicam, crane, will be at the nikon.
we made a music video test, and is very very clean.
