Hi Sam,

Can I see the pictures of the Roundfront anamorphics

Sam T sold me an anarmorphic lens he claimed was 'Unused, new'. After sending to Focus Optics, I was informed it has irreparable damage. Please email me for details.

For anyone who is interested,

I have bought numerous lenses from Samson over the last year and a half and I must say that my experience has been excellent. Samson has access to a lot of these rare vintage lenses and they are what they are! These lenses are 30 or 40 years old and the Ana's frequently have flaws. Samson is not a lens tech and the lenses he finds have often been sitting for decades unused. They may look great but they are still a product of 30 or 40 year old technology. Samson prices his lenses fairly and deals with his customers fairly. I recently helped him service lenses through Stuart at Focus Optics and the buyer at the end of process wound up with excellent glass. I only wish that I could have afforded to buy them.

For the uninitiated, this process has its risks... These lenses are not always perfect and as buyers we must understand that there is a risk. But I will say that Samson is an excellent and trustworthy source for these rare products. I personally love the look of Lomo's. From a technical standpoint they have a lot of flaws, but with the right exposure they are unique. I prefer Lomo's to much of the modern glass although the mechanics are often frustrating.

Of all the dealers of Russian glass I have dealt with in the last few years, I would say that Samson is the most honest, fair, and reliable. I'm disappointed that others have not had the same experience. But I would not hesitate for a moment to buy another lens from him based on my experience.

If you have any questions or concerns about Samson, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,

Justin Hearn

It depends on the experience and how much you spend. I had a bad experience after purchasing an expensive anamorphic lens and Sam's refusal to help resolve it. I serviced my lens from Focus Optics as well and was informed the lens was damaged and can't be repaired. Sam has so far refused to answer my concerns.

I can provide proof from Focus Optics that the lens can not be repaired, at least by Focus Optics.

Dear Adnan, you bought that lens for 9k without an upfront payment. But when you received the lens you said that it had an issue with focusing(you knew it already from footages) and transfered only 7k saving 2k for repair at Focus optics. You even wrote that it was your best purchase.
After 10 months (June, 2012 - April, 2013) you are saying that the issue is not solved. Everybody knows that most returns are accepted within 7days. But still I asked you to ship the lens back and offered to refund the 7k you paid. But you don't want to ship the lens back and you want me to pay for all the expenses. I think it is not fair.
I did not know that issue and hide it from you. I could only make some footages with bad sharpness and sent to your email before you bought it. The lens had no signs of use. It was (new) unused. It lied in a box for many years. It had a passport, a manual, a lens holder, an extra mount and both caps. Sorry, I cannot cover all your expenses exept of that you paid for the lens. You can read on the lens passport that even LOMO FACTORY produced that lens with only 6 months warranty.

You offered the lens as NEW/UNUSED. These are your words, which proved to be false. You misrepresented this item. We did negotiate the price and you agreed to sell me the lens for $7800 NOT $7k. I did NOT force you and even offered to return the lens and pay myself for return shipping. The main issue is that you sold a lens which is defective. I spend the money to service and replace the PL mount because you led me to believe the item was unused.

You don't have to reimburse me but you can't stop me either from informing the public about your deceptive selling tactics.

Please understand that I am not a lens tech and I did not disassemble the lens. I sent you unsharp footages we discussed that issue. I shipped the lens before you paid. You had to inspect the lens and do payment. I didn't misrepresent the item.
I won't ask you to stop informing the people your bad experience with that lens. Wish you good luck in your business!

I inspected the lens, yes, but the issue was the internal damage that according to Focus Optics, was caused by someone tampering/modifying the lens before I received it. Your EXACT description was "Brand new. Unused." But the lens was NOT unused as you had described when you sold me the lens. You misrepresented the lens and I have written proof from Focus Optics that clearly states that the lens has irreparable damage.

Are the fast primes still available?

Anybody that buys any Russian lens takes a chance, no matter who they buy them from and that is simply a fact of life. Any lens that was out in the Soviet Film universe lived out a difficult life and you have to set you expectations to that truth and take your chances no matter who is selling it or what they say. Sometimes you will win and sometimes you will lose and you have to be willing to lose sometimes. I have seen lenses in post-Soviet studios that looked as if someone had been using them to hammer nails. And I have some Russian lenses that are really extraordinary. Its Russian roulette...
