  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon EF Cine lenses with Red One MX

So I have a dilemma: I've been acquiring the Rokinon Cine lenses for my 7D and I absolutely love them, and while at first I had my heart set on purchasing the Scarlet, I've been really considering purchasing a used Red One. My problem becomes actually using my lenses with the R1. Because the Rokinons are completely manual, I need an EF mount similar to the Nikon mount for the R1, but after spending long agonizing hours online searching for a solution, I'm no closer to an answer.

I know about the Birger mount, and I know a few listings here are selling the R1 with that mount, but I would love something a lot simpler. Ideally, a dumb EF mount. Anyone have any ideas if one even exists? If not, anyone know of a website with reasonably affordable PL lenses. I am working on a rather tight budget and would like to utilize what I already have and spend any extra income on more lights or camera accessories.

Supposedly Wicked Circuits made a dumb mount for EF lenses. I never saw it, I can't vouch for it, and I don't think they make it anymore. At least one copy was available for sale on Reduser at one point.
 
That's a shame. I'd really like to find an alternative to the Birger mount. Not that I don't like what the Birger mount does, I just need something simpler. Oh, well. I guess I'll keep looking.
 
Allstar is working on a dumb EF adapter for the A-Mount system for lenses that have manual aperture adjustment like your Rokinons. I don't know the timetable for it's availability, but that would give you the ability to use your Rokinon lenses and also be able to intermix them with PL, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Hasselblad, etc. (when using the corresponding adapters).
 
I installed the Leitax EF mount after the expiry of the warranty on my BTR1MX, have used it on a couple of shoots and have been very happy with it so far. I understand it will void the Red warranty, though, but if you're buying used anyway then presumably that wouldn't be an issue...
 
I plan on doing this too as soon as i get a RED ONE. Do you only need the 265 Euro Leitax ring for the mount to work? and none of the other pieces they offer which look like replacement parts?

The ring has two parts, one that mounts directly to the R1 body and the second part (the actual EF mount) attaches to the first. There is an installation manual online that shows the pieces required and how it works. I haven't mounted that one specifically but I have mounted the Birger mount and that was straight forward and easy. I can't imagine the Leitax mount is any different.

Thanks! i looked through the installation i just didnt know if you needed to buy multiple things from the site to make it work or if just the mount they had included the 2 different rings.

i dont have my R1 yet but i will in a few months. ill pm you when i get it if i still need it.

ive also been looking at the FD mount because i know some people who have a bunch of fd primes for cheap.

Last time I checked the mount came in 2 pieces that had to be purchased separately. When I was going to purchase the mount (before I went with the Scarlet) the actual EF portion of the mount was sold out. Not sure if that's still the case now.
 
Looks like Leitax have a new, slightly redesigned mount for Canon EF - http://www.leitax.com/Leica-lens-for-Cinema-cameras.html

As mentioned on the page, for the R1MX you'll need the first three items on the list. Installation (http://www.leitax.com/conversion/Cine/Red/index.html) is very straightforward, though you want to make sure you do it in an organized, dust-free environment. Taking the mount base off is a bit sweat-inducing but luckily you only need to do it once. :smilewinkgrin:

Been using the mount for several months of shooting so far, works great. The only practical thing to be aware of is that when you tighten the locking ring when mounting a lens, you don't want to clamp it down super tight because if you do, the whole mount can start to unscrew when you try to remove the lens (the mount is locked on its threads but the hex screws that do so are really tiny). So "snug finger tight" is enough and the lens still stays on plenty solid.

Back focus adjustment is a bit of a hassle compared to the Red PL mount, but on the other hand if you have a known set of lenses you probably won't need to mess with it a whole lot. I just adjusted mine once and it's been fine ever since. I shoot on mostly old manual-focus glass with EF adapters so I like to set the back focus so the lenses go a fraction past infinity focus anyway, just so I don't all of a sudden end up unable to reach infinity if there's a difference with adapter tolerances or some other random variable.
