the last time i saw melanie i remember asking her if she considered herself an artist. while i was sure, she didn't seem so. she's absolutely the loveliest person i know, i hope you enjoy her beautiful artwork and the beautiful things she has to say about it. "my responsibility as an artist is to convey beauty in people. to find the wonderful side of things that may typically be ignored, or just kind of passed on the street..." - melanie norris

latest in the series by the brass brothers, making art, which discusses the creative process by listening to artists look at their work.
others include texture, dialogue, pressure, imagination, constraints, light, effect, & fantasy.

what does it mean to call yourself an artist and what inspires your art-making? i like trying to create an experience for someone, or a happening, something unexpected which plants a meditative seed within a person or place. :)

Thanks, Paul. It changed my morning to watch this. I can see that your friend is serious about what she says, and has real talent. It's good to hear an artist who can speak intelligently about her process.

I've met quite a few people I'd consider artists that hedge when you ask them if they consider themselves artists - and have had some interesting discussions of the subject. The general definition is broad but it seems like when you talk to creative people they inevitably try to dice it up into categories, artist, artisan, craftsperson, etc... and the more you dice it up the more slippery it becomes. I think many creative people think of 'artist' as some sort of ideal, they attach all sorts of qualifiers to the work (shouldn't have practical use is one I've heard a lot) and see it as something to aspire too - not realizing that they're already there.

Loved the video! It's great to hear the story of a story from the creator and to see their passion come alive. Thanks for sharing!

i will say that history has a certain mass and momentum that's at once easy to get necessarily caught up in while still feeling inadequate to do so. i don't think i'm the only artist that has felt tiny and inadequate in comparison, but i'm not sure that's always a terrible thing... i do like to think of art as a conversation across space and time. the trouble with trying to see the big picture, as so many do, is it's so easy to miss the small things - what's already there. life is so beautifully difficult like that :)

I really loved everything about this. Thank you for sharing it Paul. Time to spread the word about their Kickstarter.
