  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro on the way? (Really, this time...)

So... no CUDA support, then? Sigh. Is the raw power of those AMD cards enough to compensate?

Seems odd when many of their users use NVIDIA accelerated software that they would make it hardwired with AMD. Adobe and DaVinci do not have bonuses via AMD cards, correct?

External card may not be that big a deal - with the AMD internals and a dedicated NVIDIA external... plus RedRocket? Just thinking out loud.

Otherwise intrigued, I suppose.

Well... rereading the feed:

528GBps total bandwidth on the AMD card... and supports 3 4K displays natively. That's pretty hot.

I guess I just want to see benchmarks in the traditionally CUDA accelerated stuff. I imagine they will support external NVIDIA cards, and with the internal AMD power plus the external CUDA, it should be great. We'll see.

Lol exactly.

I dont mind the big fat towers....
But this is pretty impressive performance for such a little package....

and thunderbolt 2 is still nowhere near full 16x pciv3

v3 is about 1000MB per sec/ per lane (985 to be exact)

so thats about 7880mbit/per lane.....or 126,000mbit for all lanes vs 20,000mbit for thunderbolt 2

thunderbolt 2 is effectively 3 lanes pciv3 or 6 lanes pciv2....

not sure if that is enough for the new rocket...but a pretty good start, and complete overkill for storage

but if they don't fix the inter polarity issues we won't be able to run gpus externally...meaning those of us who need specific gpus, or more then two gpus.. are screwed...they turned the mac pro into a super beefy mac mini...which i admit is what a lot of people want...but how the hell can those of us who need access to different gpus get our work done now? simply, we can't...

for the record i'll prob still buy one, but how is making the one model they have that is expandable, non expandable supposed to help content creators? they made the mac pro into a macbook and now were stuck upgrading it as gpus get better...that's so dumb

People had the same complaints about the iMac and rMBP.

Now most are loving the experience using TB enclosures.

This really is a year for manufacturers and software companies telling the consumers that everything they want is wrong and that they aren't allowed to work they way they want to work.

I genuinely appreciate the Red business ethos so much more these days...

Man that thing is gonna look so great on your desk...with expansion chasis just hanging out...

I think had apple hit us with this years ago it'd have been more shocking...now it's just kind of "meh, it's a mac mini pro" I really don't know if there's a solid enough reason to dump my late model imac 27" (current version).

I think we just wanted a faster tower.

The Graphics Cards however... I am worried ! Will it have a proprietary design like it seems or is it just for today's demo purposes ? (since now we have unified Nvidia drivers and so on for Mac Pro, it would be a BAAAAD idea !)

From BMD forum:

"Hi,

We have been testing with DaVinci Resolve 10 builds and this (the new Mac Pro) screams. Its amazing and those GPUs are incredible powerful. I am not sure what I can say as I am only going off what Apple has talked about publicly here in the keynote for what I can say right now, however there is a whole new OpenCL and DaVinci Resolve 10 has had a lot of performance work done to integrate it and its really really fast. Those GPUs are very powerful and have lots of GPU memory so this is the Mac we have been waiting for! We have lots of Thunderbolt products too so video in and out is taken care of.

We will have more details once the guys get back from WWDC and we get some more info from Apple on what we can talk about etc.

Overall we could not be happier!

Regards,

Grant Petty

I think the specs are pretty damn awesome and I suspect benchmarks will be significant. I'm excited they are still in the ring swinging.
