  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wacom tablet users? Need input

I just ordered the medium with the wireless option. I may add the mouse later, but I haven't had a mouse that just had a vertical scroll wheel since the Mighty Mouse came out years ago, so I'm a bit turned off by that. I have a ridiculous amount of desk space so ill just keep both for now. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll report back after I get my feet wet with it first.

There are some powerful tools that come with it as well like the radial menu that you can customize. You can have every tool at the nib tip. The only issue I have is that when I use it with Cine-X sometimes the driver stalls the program, but it only happens when I have my footage at full rez. It's probably an isolated incedent though as no one else seems to have the same issue.

Ok, so I got it and I am reluctantly returning it. It seems like an awesome tool, but it's not for me. I feel like I'm throwing a football with my left hand when I use it. I'm sure I'd get better at it, but after 10+ years of using a mouse with custom keyboard shortcuts, I'm just way too fast at it. If I was doing more AE work or photoshop I'd probably get more use out of it, but for standard editing and color correction I think it may just collect some dust. I was just intrigued by it and was getting bored with the way I was editing a bit. Thanks to everyone for their help on this and sorry if I wasted your time.

Hi Michael - that's a shame.

Sounds like (from your football throwing description) that you're using the whole pad area?

That's why I suggested a smaller one - I prefer the small space as it's then a really quick navigation. You could try mapping a much smaller area in the pad - that works in the same way as having a small pad (and allows for navigation that's very fast as you're moving your wrist - not your arm).

Anyway - nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say ;)

I agree. Bigger isn't always better. I have a medium I-4 and I have also mapped a smaller area on the pad. I will never go back to a mouse. I do a bit of compositing and animation and the thought of using a mouse for anything other than collecting dust brings a certain anxiety to me that is difficult to explain. It is certainly not for everybody, but it has done me well. There is no right or wrong way to interface with your editing software, so long as it gets done.

Andy,

I tried a few things. I got the medium because I was afraid of it being too small with running a 30 inch monitor. I gave it a honest effort...swear. I may revisit it at some point if I ever get around to learning AE and photoshop more, but for now I'll be just an old school mouse and keyboard guy. I'm also intrigued by trying out the crtl+surface:

Well, at least you tried!

I miss the dark & distant days of driving on-line suites with BVE-910's (and off-line on RM 440's/450's etc LOL!)... ahhh - the old analogue days of the 80's and 90's.! Editing on a control surface (or Edit controller as we used to call them) is great - very rare that you looked away from your monitors... apart from looking at your crt greenscreen with your EDL :)

Maybe have a look at the Avid Artist series - there's a variety of stuff there... don't know if it works in Premiere?

Personally, I think I'm going to investigate Lightworks a little... it's dedicated Edit controller has been around for years (since the 90's) and I like the idea of going back to old school ways.

Is anyone using multiple displays? If it maps to the main monitor, how do you roll over to a secondary monitor? Do you map it to an express key?

You can map any of the express keys to quickly switch between: BOTH -> M1 -> M2 -> back to BOTH (monitors). You can also program the express keys to just switch between any combination. I have mine set BOTH -> M2 -> back to BOTH. I use it mostly to cover both monitors, but switch to my M2 for precise drawing, roto, etc... and then quick back to BOTH. You can also program the express keys for any combination of commands. I have my set to cover full range of functions for color-correction for when I am on a location without my control surface. Works like a charm. You can also map the whole display (and combination of displays) to the whole area of the tablet, or you can specify your own mapping, or - as I prefer it - to constrain proportions, so when you draw circle - it is circle on the screen, not an ellipse...

Once you get used to it (couple weeks at most) - your productivity will go up dramatically and there is no turning back.
I have also opted for the wireless model as it perfectly matches the size of my 17" MBP and can work off of its own battery on the location without blocking any USB port...

The cintiq 12inches changed my life in AE for roto and paint work. It really speeded up the process for me. I'm using a track pad (so I can keep the pen in my fingers) for acessing the interface in my 2 main screens, rather than puting down the pen to grab the mouse, or switching the pen mode to access the 2 screens.

But when I'm not doing paint or roto, I always prefer the mouse. So I have different workspaces in AE for different tasks, and my window jumps from the screen of the cintiq to my regular monitor. That's just me, and I've seen guys being really acurate doing everything with the pen.

So for me, I don't see benefits using the pen when editing in Premiere.
