  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDLine Docs woefully out of date

redline --help gives a fairly comprehensive list, doesn't it? That is more up to date than the pdf doc. What else do you need to know?

Thanks! I was trying to figure out the flags for REDGamma3 and REDColor3.

Yeah --help is really always the most up to date way to get help. That being said the manual situation is something we plan on fixing soon.

Is there a thread number flag?

I'm only seeing about 15% CPU usage. If I run two REDLines I get about 30% so I don't think I'm network limited. If I render out of REDCine I seem to get multi-thread rendering.

Good question, Gavin. On my HP Z820 with 16 cores, I get about 14% CPU usage, while my Dell M4700 laptop with single quad core i7 runs at about 34%. And the Dell renders same r3d file faster. Am I missing some setup parameter on the Z820? BTW, it has 32G ram, fast RAID, Quadro 4000 video.

You have to run multiple threads in background yourself to be able to saturate your cores.
Premiere does this for you behind the scenes. RCX does not.

Thank you for the info, Les. Hope Red adds a bit of threading intelligence soon.

secret sauce...

secret sauce...

Maybe this will help you guys, I had it stuffed in an obscure corner of my web archives. I wrote this about 12 years ago (yeah, I know...). Anyway, it's a Win32 app that lets you launch any app you want with any desired priority and affinity for whichever CPU you want to bind it to.

I have a Win64 update to this, that's still at least 6 years old (haha), but won't be able to post it for a few days until I can get back to the appropriate systems. At any rate, this Win32 version should let you assign REDLINE (or any other app) to any combination of CPUs/ threads on up to a 16-core system (32 threads), as that is the limit for this app. Hope it works as good as it used to (or as good as the 64bit version does). Let me know if it does or doesn't... I have my own render manager software we use in-house, so don't use the individual loader apps like this one anymore, especially the 32bit oldie. It was just somewhat handy and I found it in an online archive of sorts. Ignore the email/ web addresses in the info, those are no longer valid. They were for my old animation company from back then, which shut down in '08. Ah, memories...

I'm not even able to find a RedLine manual… I have six 3930k machines in a render-rack, my primary workstation is a MacPro 12-core. Am I able to utilise the 3930k machines running Windows, or are Linux needed?

Where do I start? :)

Here are some threads on Reduser where I explain Redline a little and give some examples of scripts using Redline. This stuff is all very old and some things in Redline might have changed, but this should get you started.

Thank you very much Dustin! Do you also know where I could find the original manual?
Under the help menu in REDCINE-X

Gavin's posts above contain the text of the embedded help file in REDline, with the more up to date options.
