  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First of all i must say i love my red one mx, its amazing, this post may seem like a rant but its just to ask some questions i had about the camera. Feel Free to school me on anything

1) Why cant red create a new shooting mode that will shoot a downscaled 1080 file using the full sensor? I know many people have asked this before but now with the thing hackers are doing with Magic Lantern with the markIII i just feel as it shouldn't be that difficult to achieve from a camera that is way more advanced. (Red One MX)

2) Could there be a day when the firmware for the Red One MX be open sourced?

3) Would it ever be possible to see a better compression rate on the red one mx? like redcode52

4) I Know in Magic Lantern there is a way to do HDR by programming (for example:
go to 7:47)

As I understand it:

1) the Red One doesn't have the processing power on board to scale the footage down on the fly. That's why there is a specific module for Epic to do it. (Proxy module)

2) I'd bet that too much proprietary code overlaps current Epic/Scarlet builds. So, no. Probably not.

3) the bandwidth of the Red One is already maxed out by the addition of 4.5k and Redcode 42. So, no. Probably not.

4) again, the limit is bandwidth. The Red One simply can't record frames fast enough to implement HDRx.

As I said, this is how I understand it. I could be wrong... It happened once! :)

Thanks jason!
i had the same understanding going into this post but just feel like this question always needs to be out there.
I feel like theres would be much more customization made to the source if more hacking was encouraged by red, not saying better features would come out but something that is more tailored for each user. Like the ANA shooters who are looking for the right crop
The companys that are going to rip off the red code already HAVE and will be able todo it regardless of red having it open or not.
Being that red has a great community i just feel like this will empower the cameras even more.
Outputting a clean 1080 raw signal doesn't seem impossible atleast from my point of view. but a part of me thinks why wouldn't they have just done this if the camera could actually pull it off.

& Bob
Im guessing SDI doesn't have enough bandwidth for raw? I know hdmi doesn't have enough, do you think hdmi2.0 will improve this for the future?

I think the question has been answered, Red does not believe in anything less then 4k, and as a content creator, I would have to agree. It's all about being a part of the future. You can find now, it's all around. Funny that it has to be people hacking the camera to give you what you want, and not the camera people with 5draw. That is why red is different.

It seems Number 1 is all about a specific paradigm and always has been to RED's credit. Their point of difference was a 4K DSMC. With forward thinking they pushed this angle, 1080p was just not good enough to replace a film format. While this is true, arguably we still live in that 1080p world but things are moving very quickly. With current tech getting a HD result from your 4-5K footage is very simple and quick, transcodeing in RedcineX, resolve with CUDA, a rocket or SSD recorder/monitor. I recently got a rocket and am blown away by it. With TV here in Australia, most things still broadcast less than HD. But with the work we do we rarely use 1080p. Recently we shot elements used in our digital environments on The Great Gatsby and another upcoming feature all at 5K where the extra resolution and definition could cater for projected camera moves. I just don't think the argument for HD still stands.

Interesting..

So I've often thought that capturing a 1080 file from the RED would be perfect for me, since much of what I shoot is advertising and output to 720p for broadcast or the web. Most clients don't even want 1080 masters because they think the files are too big…

I also shoot short form content for web distribution that I own outright, and license to the giant web media companies, all of that content is shot /mastered at 4K, output to 1080.

Then yesterday… I'm on a call with a company in India that wants my content for their iP set-top box that they will be rolling out across their country later this year. V1 will be 1080 - but 18 months from now V2 will be 4k!! The ask from them was would I be willing to ramp up production over the next 12 months to accommodate creating content in 4K? YES! was my response - in fact I have almost two years of production already in 4K with 4K edit masters sitting on hard drives waiting for the light of day.

So - I'll never even think of capturing anything at less than 4K ever again. I mean post production is really easy in 4K as well, even the 'hated & maligned' edit 'toy' of FCPX handles 4k .RMD files natively without any transcode needed. Sure you need the Rocket card to really make it fly, but really? Not that hard or that big of a deal.

Downscaling will create a much better 1080p image... There are also toys such as RED's awesome new Proxy recorder which should give you capabilities much more compatible than what I currently use to capture on set dailies.

"2) Could there be a day when the firmware for the Red One MX be open sourced?"

I wont touch this with a 10 foot pole, but I think any improvement and or alterations would need to be ok'd by top brass ... your messing with someone else's creation and that is not really legal or ethical unless the provider says it's cool.

"3) Would it ever be possible to see a better compression rate on the red one mx? like redcode52"

RED has stated they will continue to service the REONE so I would ask a RED-REP about this.

"4) I Know in Magic Lantern there is a way to do HDR by programming (for example:"

Nobody should re-program a RED on their own. Unless you are the engineers who do the programming for the inventor.

... my two cents -- couldn't help saying something.
