  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anyone tell me what the FOV is for these Anamorphic focal lengths with respect to 5k ANA s crop sensor

35mm
50mm
80mm

Thanks

I need to set my directors viewfinder for a scout using ANA lenses for an upcoming shoot and I don't ow an epic to just test.

Example the 35mm has a FOV of a 28mm or whatever it is.?????

If 5K ANA is 3296 pixels across, I think that works out to 17.83mm across, and the 35mm anamorphic projected area is 21mm across, so that's a 1.18X crop factor. So if that's correct, if you set your finder to a 35mm 2X anamorphic focal length, you'd need to use a 30mm on the Epic to match that view in your finder, a 42mm to match the 50mm anamorphic lens markings, and a 68mm to match the markings for an 80mm.

But if you have only a 35mm, 50mm, and 80mm anamorphic lens to use, then you'd have to set your lens finder to 41mm, 59mm, and 94mm anamorphic.

But I think the 3296 pixel image actually has to be trimmed slightly since the height is 2700 and the final image has to be 1.20 : 1 (to get a 2.40 image once unsqueezed) so that means the horizontal width is trimmed a bit from 3296 to 3240. So that's more of a 1.2X crop factor, so for a 35mm, 50mm, and 80mm anamorphic lens, you'd have to set your finder to 42mm, 60mm, and 96mm anamorphic (not spherical) to get a sense of the field of view of those lenses would be on 5K ANA mode.

I may be off in my calculations though, this isn't based on real experience, just playing with my calculator...

David, besides how much I admire your work and thank you for your contributions to Reduser for which I've learned more than i ever could've expected, what calculator are you using?

I'm just using a regular calculator based on 5120 pixels = 27.7mm across on the Epic, so 3296 pixels must be 17.83mm and 3240 pixels must be 17.53mm, etc. And I'm assuming that a directors finder uses 21mm as the basis for the width of a 35mm 2X anamorphic area (camera negative area is a bit bigger but 21mm is the projected area so I went with that). But there is always a chance that I've miscalculated...

Thanks David!
