  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any one used Canon FD lenses on epic with fd to ef adapter?

Yes, they work well. The FD mount is very solid particularly with the older breech block mount.

Ive not used the Ed Mika conversion or other similar EF re mounts but they look good. Not as Solid as FD though.

Some FD lenses convert very well to PL.

I don't think FD to EF glass less adapter is doable for infinity focus.
FD id 42mm BF and EF is 44mm. for macro work it's fine but not infinity or normal working distances.
We make a DSMC canon FD mount if anyone is interested...

That one has a 1.4x extender element. 1 stop light loss, 1.4x FL increase, probably image quality loss with a cheap glass element.
But hey, for the price it's a nice experiment....

it's $495, in stock...
I would not convert FD lenses to EF. EF mount is grosssly inferior mounting system for motion. FD gives you "positive locking" a'la PL mount- especially on the earlier "breech" mount lenses

Do you have a number I can call you on to talk about your fd mount?

Jacek, do you still have the DMSC FD mount in stock?

We use FD lenses and have near a full set of the best FD lenses. They are very nice if you want the look FD glass provides. Mechanically they are very good for a stills lens. We use an FD mount on Epic and it works very well, the only down side bing if you do want to use a lens of non FD mount you have to change the mount. We may though don't want to change the lens mount convert to EF so we can use the lens set on other EF cameras accepting its not as good as FD. We also prefer the breech block style FD lenses if we can find them in good order.

One of the great things about Epic is the fact you can install all sorts of lens mounts to access non PL glass on the camera for artistic reasons for motion picture and stills work.

id not even think about the adaptor you mention, just sort the lens mount and you will be in good shape.

I adapted my old Canon FD 150-600 lens to use on my Epic by buying the $100 adaptor sold by Schneider Optics in Hell-A and it works very well.

Hey Greg, can you provide a link to this $100 FD mount you bought?

Thanks,
Mike

Some controversy here as these are lenses converted to EF as the camera systems we have are EF mount. Not as robust as FD but EF was whats needed in this application. Stainless EF mounts, 80mm fronts, Aluminium focus gears. De-clicked iris. Les Bosher did the conversion.

What Im pleasantly supprised about is how little breathing there is and the very smooth long throw focus for a still lens. They have vey nice Bokeh and are very sharp.

Dave i've been interested in doing this for my lenses as well. Would you mind sharing some details on the process, time it took, lenses you got adapted and price? Would be really helpful and greatly appreciated.

The main advantage of these lenses is small and light, they are outstanding optically and well build mechanically. There do have a very nice character to them

We chose to have them converted to EF mount by Les Bosher who fits a Stainless EF mount. We have an aluminium focus gear fitted and an 80mm front. There is a good argument to leave them FD mount if using on Epic but we also wanted to use them on DSLR's. Depending on where you go the cost of conversion is some where between £100 and £160 per lens plus about £80 for the gear. 80mm fronts come from Les Bosher, Duclos or Cordvision. Our main reason for these was having 77mm filter thread. An other option for some would be a dandelion chip if you want the DSLR focus assist function.

The only issue Im aware is a couple of lenses, Id need to check which but probably the 24mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.2 just touch the focus screen mount on a Canon 5D3, the lens fits but you need to be mindful of this. 5D2 is fine and Epic and other camera's that don't have any behind lens obstructions will work fine.

20mm, f2.8, 24mm f1.4, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.4, 135mm f2, 200mm f2.8 all are the best versions L glass where we can find them. All are non breach block versions ie FDn mount.

We are very pleased with the set.

I bought this mount to go with my set of FD Glass. Gives you Infinity and works great. The EOS to FD Mounts I used were not great. Here's the link to the mount.

Shot a couple of small music videos with the FD's. Here's one:

I was impressed with the contrast and sharpness. The FD glass is more interesting and plays off the light better that the current EF Glass. Cool Spherical Flares. I especially loved the 35mm F2.0 made with thorium glass and the 55mm F1.2.

In my opinion converting them to EF Mount is only important if you are going to be renting them out.
