  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BTS from Evil Dead

Maybe it's a dark comedy? Ok seriously, looks to me like they are matching lighting that may have been shot earlier in the day. Also, there is a lot of smoke being used, and those screens could also be used to cut the wind. Shoot outdoors at the same location with continuing light changes from clouds is such a pain!

Light control. Noting two different materials.
The solids knock out light coming from that particular direction - creating a negative space.
The artificial black silks (the ones you can see some shape through) - diffuse the light without creating a bounce or reflection (unlike a white silk)
Depending on manufacturer, the black silk will remove just about 2 stops of light.

Yeah, definitly light control. Placing a solid or translucent flag to prevent lighting from the top or from one side suddenly makes the keylight move to the non flagged side. Look at BTS from photographers like Peter Lindbergh, he uses black fabric in his classic BW photographs for decades. Definitly worth to experiment with flags, sometimes it is fine to have a small flag like an 48x48 close to the subject, just let the gaffer move with the talent.

Cheers

AKA "Hollywood"-ing a flag.
but yeah, having a grip dept with large tools is at least a quarter of what you do on an actual project with an actual budget. Art dept is another quarter. That Cabin was probably built from scratch... the original is long ago demolished

I know what negative fill is..

But Ive just never seen it done like this before. So, I wasnt sure if it was negative fill or what.
Having large black fabrics (any many of them) hoisted up high like that, just never seen it done.

I like how there is no music just like you are on set. Very cool need to do more stuff like this wish they did this for star wars/Indiana Jones. Stuff like that would be EPIC!!!

look up behind the scenes of predator (the new one with adrien brody) which was shot in the jungle they also do the same thing but with even bigger black flags

Yes. Negative fill 100%. Look at how it alters the light.
