I think I threw up a little in my mouth:confused5:

This guy Will Rodgers is burning the entire market of his community to make a desperate fast buck. He has none of my respect, and only my contempt.

He is blacklisted by me personally - as he better never call me for anything, ever, I will hang up on him, and I ever hear his name mentioned by others I will suggest they do the same.

Come on guys, help me out here, a race to the bottom is in nobody's interest.

Wow....way to ruin the rental market. I understand that you're in Cali and its a saturated market, but damn why don't you just rent it for free? It's guys like you that ruin it for us, trying to make a living. Very disappointing that there's people out there that desperate to make a fast buck.. :frown:

Hopefully he'll learn soon enough that there is no nobility in poverty, because that's were he is headed. You add up a dollar figure of that equipment and there is no way he is making any money. Once the wear and tear sets in or his camera goes down, it will be an expensive fix.

Perhaps some one should suggest some rates for him, like what do people think the lowest rate should be, keep in mind this guy is not insured and does not have a backup or the ability to get another camera if his goes down?

Not that it hit home, but I worked with Will on a job a few days ago and we had a nice chat about this very thing over lunch. I tried to explain about value and not just getting business with a cheap price. I'm hoping something stuck. Only time will tell. He says his boss makes the prices.

I don't get your analysis - 100 days rental and he has more than paid for it all. Are you suggesting that the epic and red lenses and other gear can't handle 100 days of use? and if he budgets 15 percent for repairs that's 15 more days. If he rents it 300 days over 2 years then he has profited $65K.

I'm an early RED1 (SN206) and EpicX owner but I have never had any illusions/delusions about what the rental value should be. As pro cameras go it is very cheap to purchase/own and one would hope that it is like other cameras where they are good for 3-6 years or more (even if they are surpassed technologically.)

It just seems grossly unrealistic to get $1000/day for a camera that not only can be purchased in a workable package (i.e. Canon lenses) for around $25K to $30K AND where you can buy one tomorrow or there are thousands of other ones out there for rent.

Thanks Dave for explaining why my rates are so low.
it truly is my boss that picks the price, i just post for him.
and as for killing the market, first of all we are located in SoCal and the majority of small rental houses locally rent for close to the prices we do. Second we are always open to renting to big productions but we specifically want to help out the lower budget projects.

Also its unfortunate that some Red Users loose respect for others when they are just doing their job.

P.S. the boss and i are discussing changing our rates soon as to not continue ruining business for others.

thanks.

You should specify that you are only posting for him. I think we all thought you were an owner/op.

To Michael Hastings: 100 days is a LOT of rental days - very, very few indy-owned cameras rent out more than 50 days a year - and really you have 2 years to amortize your camera, maybe less. Besides, and it's more than 100 days because during that time you need to pay insurance, storage, maintenance, etc.

There are many ways to differentiate yourself. Here we have two of the most fabulous and competent crew chics on the planet who go out with the gear, included in the price. People rent our gear because they love having those people on set, and those people solve and avoid problems in many ways and make themselves very useful.

In this way we are not a commodity - because you get those people if you rent from us.

So our prices are just reasonable, nothing more, but yet I'd like to think that we stand out with service quality.

And yet, a year with 30 days of rental is a VERY good year.

I completely agree. The prices are dropping all the time and a production that's running two months is going to opt to just buy a camera if they have to rent it for $1000 a day..that right there ruins the market; by not even having one. Don't cry about the competition, if it works for them and they are comfortable then so be it. At least we can take solace in the fact that they aren't price fixing as has been suggested in previous posts.

Indeed, price fixing is illegal and where ever it was mentioned previously should probably be edited out.

That said. Low prices are now part are the game. Cameras can be purchased for less than some productions would spend on renting for a 2 month or so long project, which then just adds another camera to the mix after their production is over. Then there are other rental houses that specialize in longer rentals like borrow lenses, or lens rentals , both or which have red cameras, neither of which have prices any where what owner ops are renting at.

Lower prices are where we are heading. Its a supply and demand market. And there is a lot of supply.
