Is PP CS6 a "GREAT" Improvement Over CS5.5 ? Does it accept R3D files BETTER ??

Does Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 have a lot of advantages over CS5.5 in a Windows7 PC?

I am having trouble transferring files from our new/used Scarlet SSD Cards into our current Adobe PP CS5.5 program (v5.5.0). In fact, they won't load in at all. I was hoping that upgrading to PP CS6 would resolve those issues. Maybe even upgrading the CS5.5 version to v5.5.2 would help. ????

I frankly don't understand why I have no trouble at all loading up R3D files from our Red-One's Red Drives, but the files from our Scarlet's SSD Cards do not load up at all into that program. I can see the shots in RedCineX and the RedPlayer, but NOT in CS5.5.

BTW - Both cameras are set up the same way. The only difference is the cameras themselves and the media. Both are set to: RC36/9:1, 1/48sec, 4K-HD, 29.97fps, ISO-1600.

Your help and advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Have you installed the Red importer plugin? It's kind of a pain but you have to manually install it. You don't gave to do this in PP6.

Have no idea what this is. Never heard of it.

Is it on the Red website? And, why does it have to be "manually" installed?

Thanks.

Even in CS6, you still need the importer plugin to have the latest features that have been made available within the Adobe software!

Adobe has an unfortunate habit of not updating their R3D importer between releases and only releasing updates along with, or shortly after, a paid Adobe suite upgrade. We have already had two separate Adobe reps on the forums state that we need to upgrade our CS6 to CC in order to get RedColor3 support...

I'm hoping their shift to CC will at least make updates such as this a more routine and available event. Perhaps that will be one good thing to come of it...

To answer George's question, Premiere CS6 is a big improvement over CS5.5. The performance is greatly improved as well as support for R3D files. You can try it yourself though -- can run it for 30 days before activation sets in. I don't know if I would buy CS6 at this point. New version comes out in 30 days via Cloud.

Thanks Jeff.

One of the guys at Red Support just told me about that plug-in, so I downloaded it, and it did not help in the least.

Another thing I have been negligent in doing, is updating the Adobe programs, which I am in the process of doing now. It will take about 1 hour.

I'll let you guys know what happens then.

Thanks again.

You will have to re-install the R3D labs plugin after you do all the updates.

Not sure I have an answer about the reading of SSD media within CS5.5, or why it's not working for you...

ya CS6 still required the plugin...and updates required reinstall...

although I think 6.03 fixed this...I am not 100% sure....

But it looks like we wont see another 6 series update anyways....nice job adobe, had the plugin in beta, only for those in the know for the entire year :)

I hope dragon support comes faster

I find the manual nature of the Red plugin stuff odd. Adobe routinely releases updates for Raw image support (Canon, Nikon, etc.). Considering the small size of the files necessary, has an Adobe rep ever stated why they just don't add in R3D support this way? The only plausible reason I see for them not to already be doing this is to save on bandwidth. And seeing as how they're already sending gigs and gigs of software out, another MB or so is negligible if it helps save time and effort for, I'm assuming, 10's of thousands of users worldwide.

NOTHING WORKS!!

I have tried everything!

I have updated all the Adobe programs, and I've downloaded that plug-in, but nothing helps. PP CS5.5 will still NOT accept any files from the SSD card.

I am at my wits end, and getting very frustrated at this. I just do not understand what the problem could be.

WHY DO RED-ONE RED DRIVE R3D FILES WORK, BUT "NOT" FILES FROM THE SCARLET SSD CARDS???

Please help.

Thanks,

George

George, no offence, but you need to understand software before you use it, take the time to learn things first;

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?99816-**-WHY-won-t-SSD-Card-Files-load-into-PP-CS5-5

Last night you posted about your import issue, then now, there's another thread about CS5.5 vs CS6. Did you try the media browser route?

First off, make sure that all your current software is up to date. CS5.5.2 is deffo the way to go, that patch solved a lot of issues. Then as Jeff said, you need to then re-install the Adobe Labs RED plugin for CS5.5 from scratch once CS5.5.2 is all working and after a fresh reboot.

To import of your SSD, once connected in windows, this should be a browsable drive in 'My Computer'. If so, then in Premiere, navigate to windows > media browser. This will open a new window in your workspace which looks like a windows directory in 'detail' form. From here you should be able to navigate to your SSD, find your clips, then select as desired then right clip and import as you wish. Premiere will import them into the default project bin if no other bin is selected or highlighted.

If you can't see your SSD in Premiere Media Browser, that's where the issu may lie. What format is the drive in? I'll assume that it's FAT32 and therefore, there should be no issue. To test, copy a folder from the SSD to a local drive, then try using media browser locally to rule out the SSD as an issue.

To answer your original question, CS6.0.3 offers a load of improvements over CS5.5.2. In this version of Premiere, you can 'hover scub' your clips in the media browser as a quick way to preview the rushes to make sure you're importing the correct media. Let us know how you get on.

Simon,

Don't worry, you cannot offend me when it comes to computers. I'm an idiot in that area. I'm sure you're a young man and has grown up with computers all his life, even in school. I am not. When I was born there was no such thing as a computer. ;)

I struggle every day to learn more and more about computers and try to keep up with the modern age. I have been a shooter and DP all my career, and THAT I can do, and do well. But, when it comes to all this new technology, I find it very frustrating and overwhelming at times. So, please be patient with me. :)

One of the Red Support workflow specialists is going to call me today and walk me through it. I am glad Red has got such good support. I hope to be up and running today.

I love our Red-One and we've done well with it, and editing it's R3D files in CS5.5 has been no problem. I'm sure once all this crap is ironed out, I will begin to feel the same way about the Scarlet. At least, I sure hope so.

Thanks for your help.

Take care.

George

You can't put an old head on young shoulders! I understand your pain, my dad could never understand how i managed to get things to work and it's taken me years (and still is) to appreciate the good fortune my era has given me with technology. I hope my above suggestion or RED tech can help you out ASAP, if not, post back and we'll figure it out :)

I'm sure your Dad and I have a lot in common, especially when it comes to computers. My son is always wondering why I can't understand this and that. Yet, we BOTH love technology. I just wish digital had been around those many years ago when I was shooting film of wildlife. What a hassle!! :)

I'll let you know.

Be good.

Ha ha, you're great Mike. Here you are only 37 and still so young, it's a miracle if you even know what life's about. Just kidding!

I am a LOT older than that Mike, and since you have never known a world without computers, and started at such a young age, you are waaaaaay ahead of me. ;)

Last evening, I got the help of an extremely nice guy from Red Support named Mike Harris, he walked me through the computer process of installing the Red Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 Plug-In. Very, very confusing! I could have never done it myself without his help, never.

And, HOLY JUMPIN' COW TURDS, it finally works. I couldn't be happier. I can actually now load up Scarlet SSD Card shots into the PP CS5.5 program. Waaaaaaaaahooooooooooooooo!!

We begin shooting with our new/used Scarlet-X Camera today. Very excited about the prospects and what's ahead with this fine camera.

Thanks so much to all of you that have tried to help, and your great advise and tolerance.

Be good. ;)

Kidding of course....

Now, look here you young whipper-snapper!! I'm not THAT old. Not yet, anyway. ;)

When I was 37 I was DPing Special Visual Effects on "Terminator II". Holy guacamole, was it that long ago? ;)

All is well now with CS5.5. The guys from RED Support walked me through it.

Take care Dude.

well you could probably teach me a thing or 2 about being a better DP....:)

Just FYI, cs6 is a nice upgrade from 5.5 if you are doing a lot of red stuff...and the last version of adobe you can actually own
