Does "LOOK AROUND" option on RedTouch 5" Monitor make SHOOTING AREA to small ??

If you use the "look around" option on your RedTouch 5" LCD Monitor, does it actually limit the shooting area to a MUCH smaller frame than the full 5" monitor screen? If so, what's the ACTUAL SIZE of the image?

If this is true, it would seem to me that a 5" monitor is not anywhere near large enough, especially for field work.

I ask this, because seeing the image on our 7" monitor makes the ACTUAL shooting area about 4-1/2 x 2-1/2, and even that is too small for me. The "look around" space around the frame is larger than it needs to be in my opinion. It's not that large on our Red-One.

Your input is appreciated.

Thanks.

I put the look around as a toggle preset on my touch screen at one of the soft buttons ("hidden"screen buttons) ... The buttons on the side handle are all used up for me, but maybe if you set the side handle up with more toggle options, you can get a decent set of keys on there, too.

That's a very good idea from you and Bob.

I'm still reading through the manual and trying to figure out just how to "assign" those Side Handle buttons to what I want.

Any suggestions as to how I can do that?

Thanks again,

George

This is fairly easy but you will have to spend some time to make it work for you. Especially toggles are a bit more complicated.

Best start is probably right here http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?78838-Customizing-your-camera-with-build-3-2-x

Also do read the section about it in the new 4.x manual.

One thing for fast access:
Go to Settings/Setup/Keys and push the button you want to assign. It jumps to the button's settings and there you can modify it.

Ya know something Patrick? I think I've got the older Scrarlet Manual. And, I just realized that there is no Scarlet v4.x Manual on Red's Website "Download" page.

Where do I find this updated manual to download anyway? It's got to be on their website, but where?

Thanks,

George

If you want to toggle a key that has no toggle function you need to do the following

I'll try to walk you through setting up the look around toggle function (in this case I'll use the side handle A button)

Disable look around through menu
Create a preset with the name "LookAround OFF"
- include from the window KEY the item "SH User A push"
- include from the window SYSTEM the item "Look around enabled" (this saves the state if its enabled or not)
- push SAVE

Assign Side Handle Key A with "apply preset "LookAround OFF" "
Enable look around through menu
Create a second preset with the name "LookAround ON"
- include from the window KEY the item "SH User A push"
- include from the window SYSTEM the item "Look around enabled" (this saves the state if its enabled or not)
- push SAVE

Assign Side Handle Key A with "apply preset "LookAround ON" "
Go back to the presets and update the "LookAround OFF" preset by clicking UPDATE and then SAVE.

I wrote this off the top of my head but I am pretty sure this is correct. It's a bit weird because you need to think a step ahead but I'm pretty sure this is ok. Along with the thread above from Trent and the manual you should be able to do this.

EDIT: you could assign the A button release function to apply the "OFF" preset. That way the look around would only be enabled as long as you are pushing the A button and switched off once released.

Actually, that IS the one I've got, so I'm all set.

I guess I just can't find the right section. I'll keep looking.

Thanks again,

Page 133 there's not a whole lot of info about it in there. The thread tells you how to use the feature, the manual where the setting is in the ui

Forget it!

Thanks anyway Patrick. I tried it, but it is far too involved and complicated. It should not be, but it is. Ridiculously so, in my opinion. Friggin' thing!! :(

I give up. I'll live with it the way it is.

Somebody at Red needs to "seriously" rethink the Scarlet Menu. It should not take a brain surgeon to be able to figure it out. Good grief!!

Thanks,

George

Well it's advanced stuff. They added it to offer users the ability to assign buttons at all. They said they are working on a desktop solution. That's probably easier. :) if you need it let me know which button. I could whip something up for you

The "A" button on the SSD Side Module is fine, but like I said, I tried it following the steps you outlined above. Just getting around in that menu trying to do that is ridiculously complicated and not straight forward at all. I am not some friggin' computer geek ya know. I'm just a shooter and DP. This damn s**t is just over the top ludicrous.

Thanks anyway.

Bye for now.

Hey george I know this might not be the ideal way, but if you use a second field monitor you can view the whole 5k sensor without the greyed out area of the look around. I use my 6.5'' Marshall monitor to focus, frame and shoot.. and the 5'' touch to change settings. Then again I only enable lookaround when i'm recording externally to my recorder. Good Luck!
