That begins tomorrow.
Yes! This is the best news I heard all month. I almost gave up hope, and figured that I would have to wait till July. But you can never give up hope with RED. Now I can give my june clients a heads up that they could be on Epic not scarlet!

Gonna be a very busy summer for RED and everyone!

Now my question is this: can I please, please, pretty please keep my space in line but trade in my Scarlet for an Epic NOW and pay the 9500 dollars immediately and then once it's my turn for the Dragon trade in my newly bought Epic to get modified (and of course pay the other 9,500 then) without losing my space I already have in the presale list for the Dragon? ...

James, just email Nar to switch your order from SCARLET to EPIC DRAGON to SCARLET to EPIC M-X. You can reference this post in the email.

Hi Kemalettin,

We are ready to proceed with processing your eligible SCARLET-X MYSTERIUM-X to EPIC-X MYSTERIUM-X trade-in order. The price of the SCARLET-X MYSTERIUM-X to EPIC-X MYSTERIUM-X trade-in is $9,500. Please contact your Bomb Squad representative to coordinate the payment with credit card or wire transfer.

Note: you have five (5) business days from the date this notice is sent to submit the payment in full. If payment is not received within five (5) business days, your order will be canceled and your serial number will remain executed.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Once payment in full has been received by RED and your order is invoiced, our RMA Support team will assign the RMA number and provide shipping instructions to send in your SCARLET-X for inbound QC functional evaluation
You will be responsible for shipping your SCARLET-X MYSTERIUM-X BRAIN only to RED for evaluation
The SCARLET-X inbound QC functional evaluation can be performed at either our RED Irvine, CA or RED Europe Ltd. locations
We anticipate about a 3-5 business day turnaround time from when we receive your SCARLET-X to complete the inbound QC functional evaluation and send you the results
We will send you a service quote if any repairs are needed to bring your SCARLET-X up to full functional specifications
Your Bomb Squad representative will then contact you with next steps on processing your new EPIC-X MYSTERIUM-X order

5 days? thought this is gonna happen in July and spent my whole money on accessories..whats that '' your order will be canceled'' means?

Brent, quick question

I already deposited the 9,500 in my account when it was announced at NAB. Do I still have to wait the 5 days? Or will my shipping instructions be ready today? I don't have to ship today, cause I'm shooting with it this week. But would want to ship it on the 13th.

Im particularly concerned with that part too. Really didnt expect such an ultimatum from RED. I sincerely hope this can be addressed. We cant be the only two people who find this undoable....

Yesss, thank you. Nar just called and we're setting it all up now, I should be shooting 5k 120fps by late next week.

STOKED.

Jarred and Brent-
Just talked to the bomb squad (Eddie is my usual rep, but he's out of the office right now), and there seems to be confusion one way or another as to the new set up. Can I switch my current order (which is Scarlet-X to Epic Dragon) to Scarlet-X to Epic MX without losing my place in line for my eventual Epic-X to Epic-D upgrade? Clarification would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

-Harry

Jim,

Why Andrew Lesnie shot his lastest feature "Healing" on Alexa instead of Epic?

Stockholm Syndrome?

EDIT: Don't know the person you are referring to, but IMO many who use Arri stuff are used to using Arri stuff and are afraid to step out of that box. I could be wrong, or the opposite of that.

Andrew Lesnie is the DP who shot The Hobbit (and all of the Lord of the Rings films). Actually, I was wondering about this too... Maybe the Alexa was just better suited for the job?

It is not always the creative's choice -- for the most part it should be, though.

There are a million reasons (political, technical, or otherwise) that could mandate the use of one piece of gear OR even one person over another. Welcome to Kickback City...err, I mean Hollywood.

;)

:)

This ... this right here ... this is why RED is unstoppable.

I'm very proud to be a small component of this team. Awesome, Jarred.

Dear Jim and team Red,
First off, before going any further, THANK YOU, for pushing the limits, for pushing the industry, for dreaming big. I've jumped on board in september 2006 and placed a deposit for Red One #500 and never regretted it for one second.

While I obviously like the idea of "Obsolescence Obsolete", and you have delivered, with trade in programs and special deals. You obviously are running a business and have developed another way to keep your customers buying. I'm not complaining, on the one hand, it is the nature of business; and on the other, imaging technology is evolving fast (a lot faster since Red is around), and this has a cost. So no, we don't need to buy a new camera every 9, 12 or 18 months, but we are offered to make our cameras evolve with new sensors, additional modules, new lens mounts, etc. Again, I'm not complaining, you are like no other company and I am a happy customer ; and if I had more cash, I would buy everything you offer: Monochrome, Meizler, Dragon, Motion Mount, Rocket-X, etc. You developed a different business model, and I'm behind it 100%

What I really want to say, and where I see the real difference, is although you are late delivering, we KNOW what's coming, and that is what no other company does. That allows us to make choices. Look at Canon, they came out with the 300, which has some very interesting qualities, some people jumped that wagon, and six months later they come out with the 100 and the 500. For some, the 100 would have been a better option, and for others, the 500. Had they known, they could have chosen accordingly. That is one example, and all the companies, except Red, are doing that: coming out with new products, with no warning, competing with previous products. So my plea is, please do not stay silent. Of course, you have to beware of your competition and not give them too much warning. Of course, you have to beware of yourselves, and not announce deadlines you cannot keep, but please don't leave us in the dark. Allow us to plan, many of your customers have changed or built their business model according to your offerings.

Speaking of myself, and my colleagues, we are a small company, Red has allowed us to raise our expectations, results and offering. We are a Red house, we remain small and modest and have decided not to take out loans and not invest in other cameras. We invest according to our revenues and try to stay up to date with what Red offers (which is generally ahead of the competition...). Knowing what's to come, allows us to plan accordingly. Thank you for this infinitely useful way of doing things and please don't change everything.

Best regards,
Damien Molineaux

So many of us are in this boat or similar, sir. Just trying to eke out a living, and build a future. Many of the individuals on this forum represent trailblazers, entrepreneurial spirits, innovators -- people with all the creativity and ambition of a future Peter Jackson. Are there people here simply for "affordable" UHD home movies? Of course there are. Nothing wrong with that either.

But it seems many of the individuals on this forum do not possess unlimited sources of discretionary income to toss at a sophisticated, bleeding edge hobby. To the contrary, it seems owners are using the cameras as tools to earn a living, or jumpstart a nascent industry. I am certain RED gets this. And they're helping us along.

I like to think of it as a new-age business model, wherein the corporate entity is not solely concerned with the accumulation of obscene profits to the detriment of all else. Yes, it is all still business, but at the end of it all there has to be something more. The people are what make businesses, or any endeavor for that matter, successful.

RED is building an industry where there really wasn't one, and is on the front lines creating the illusive jobs our POTUS, his cabinet, and congress have been preaching to the masses -- but doing eff all. We each have the power to change things, if only in small part. Put a bunch of those small parts together, and suddenly...well, big things start to happen. (I heard that in a cool reel somewhere).

Am I saying anything original? Hahaha. No. But maybe it is arriving at just the right time, and in just the right way for someone.

I have complete faith in RED's mission objectives, and I truly believe the leadership will do everything within reason to help others, and thus generate success for all involved. We only need to look at the history of how things have been handled to date for confirmation of that. It's a smart structure. Not only does it show genuine compassion, as well as integrity, but they are hellbent to create revolutionary products that mirror our wants/needs.

We are all very lucky to be contributing, watching, taking part (whatever) on this ride. At least I feel that way, anyway.

I fully agree that Red should stay open with product pipeline (if they so chose) but I also fully understand why companies like Apple or Canon don't. When there is a large inventory of product, announcing what is coming down the pipeline may stagnate current product sales. I know the economics are more complicated than that, but that at least is a factor. Since Red stays mean and lean, I think their inventory issues are less of a concern, allowing them to discuss pipeline a bit more freely. But of course, I'm probably completely wrong.

Nope. I think you're right.

It's been one of life's pleasures watching you guys succeed. I haven't been a big part of it, but you guys have been a big part of me. Many thanks.

No, apparently we lose our spot according to my rep (after lots of discussions and emails about it), but at least they sounded confident that there would be a large load shipped at once so we wouldn't wait too long... I don't know if it's worth it or not, but I couldn't resist just getting my hands on an Epic right now for what looks to be like multiple months until the Epic Dragon comes out.

I agree though, not really fair to us... if Jarred or Brent could help us out with this, that would be pretty awesome...

"Why You Suck at Making Estimates"
http://blog.hut8labs.com/coding-fast-and-slow.html

Great article on this topic.

Tl;dr version: Estimates are impossible because as soon as you perfectly understand the scope of the problem... you've by definition solved it. Therefore you can never estimate how long a problem will actually take to solve until it's solved.

Also ego, you naturally want to assume that you won't f*#@ up. It's difficult to force yourself to add time to schedule estimates to account for all of the times you inevitably will have to start over when you hit a dead end and fail.

Sure does make the decision tougher. It seemed like Jarred was saying okay to your request to switch *and* keep our place in line, but we'll just have to say what he says.
