I would really like to see what people would value an Epic and a Scarlet at now the Dragon path has been announced. I'm talking about a Brain with SSD side module and PL mount, which is pretty much a 'brain' in my opinion. Lets not complicate it with any other accessories! My estimate is:

Epic X: US$13-14000

Scarlet X: US$6000-6500

I would put the Epic up around $15-17000. Scarlet sounds about right for the brain.

A Scarlet-X for 5–5.5k? Interesting, let me know if anyone is selling it at that price. The only ones I seem to find right now in the For Sale section are at 7.5-8k+

Consider the upgrade path...a brand new Epic dragon will be $24k with the MX well below that...new. A $19k upgrade on a used Scarlet will also give you a brand new Epic dragon which sells for $24k.

that is just for the brain though. add 1500 for side ssd, and 2k for pl, thats 27500 not to mention tax for some. I think a reg epic with side ssd and pl mount on the used market will be staying around 16 or 17 or so.

that's definitely a bit high at 16/17...why would one pay that for an MX chipped used Epic? If there was no dragon path been announced and it was a new chip on a new model camera then maybe. But it's well over two years old with a sensor almost double that. I'm thinking I might have undervalued them a little but really if anyone paid more than $13-14k and $7k for such old tech considering the developments this year, the competition, Reds own pricing points, they must really want one.

it might be old, tech but still better than 98% of whats on the market. And just less than 8 months ago they were 38k brand new. even with dragon on the horizon. I think its worth every bit of that. I paid 18k for my epic with side ssd and pl mount. Got a great price on it. But still 16 or 17 is a real good price on something that is still cutting edge. even without dragon.

One might also factor the educational discount...Epic-X Brain NEW=$17,500-$1,750.00=$ 15,750.00 U.S., for example...

Thank you very much

Ouch...but that's part of buying cameras these days. My F3 would be lucky to sell for $7K now...half of what it was new two years ago and unfortunately it isn't really any different with a RED. For me, and i'm an early adopter so have been using them since day dot...if i were looking to pay up that high an F5 would be on my horizon. Anyway, second hand values are what people decide they want to pay...i just wouldn't stretch more than around $14k... especially now...but that's just me.

Good luck with that ;)

Really, all you have to do is to watch the used market.
I don't understand the doom saying about resale values with Dragon in the horizon. Exactly because you can upgrade, the market is not flooded with people trying to get rid of their RED cameras, trying to buy the new one that just came out. That's exactly what's happening with the F3. The market is flooded and prices plummet. The RED market is not flooded, hence the prices stay put.

+1:iagree:

Hey...i own both a Scarlet and Epic as well...i would like prices to be high. I think we're on a cusp before Dragon hits and the demand for an MX chip is less so in turn value will fall, it's pretty much guaranteed like everything else. RED knocked it in half already for what they say it is to pass on the savings but in reality...they would be WELL overpriced in todays market. Dragon isn't rolling out yet and it's not meant to be a 'dooms day' thread but when it does i just see the MX chipped cameras just not holding these prices...maybe i should have stated more clearly "when Dragon is shipping". Hell, an Epic X as described is only $21K and it's a 2 1/2 year old camera that is by and far not leaps ahead as it used to be and quite frankly is down, quite a bit. There is no way in this world i would be paying up near only 10% or so less a new one unless it was only weeks old with only a few hours on it and barely even breathed on. Around a loose $14K, maybe $15K for an average condition and then if i decided to i could dump down the extra $9500 and upgrade the chip to a Dragon...but then why would i spend $23500 on a potentially 2 1/2 year old camera getting a re-furb when another $500 will give me a brand spanker! For me...really...the minute Dragon is shipping i would not be spending more than $11K on an Epic MX so when i upgrade my used Epic to a still second hand Epic but with a new chip it'll be around $4K less than a brand spanking new one. But hey, it's just my opinion, but as they say, anything is only worth what someone would pay. I'm not looking to buy one, maybe even sell my Scarlet which i bought not 9 months ago just before RED dropped their prices and is now half of what i paid. That's this day and age in technology, i'm not upset, just facing reality. But i'll upgrade my early adopter EPIC MX to a Dragon though:)

In the UK I can't find one single Epic or Scarlet for sale. Pricing stats are fine but real world market forces will be the decider.

One problem is that most wide lenses won't cover 5K, let alone 6K.

i thought the dragon sensor was roughly the same physical size as the 5k mx sensor... i could totally be wrong... it happens all the time... so says my wife.
