Hi guys,

I'm currently using a Red EVF and a Red 5.6" LCD, but I'm getting totally different color outputs on both. The EVF seems more saturated while the LCD seems 'flat'. I'm confused as to which one is more accurate, or are they supposed to be like that? Is there any way to calibrate/fix this so that they both have the same color outputs? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Niraj

Most EVFs or just VFs for that matter, are used specifically for focusing purposes. Hell, many EVFs were black and white for a long while. If you really want a good judge of color, get a good, SDI field monitor.

As far as I'm concerned - neither are for judging Colour. They're just for framing.
For judging color it's all about shooting a test, and setting a look in RCX, then trusting your workflow. In he end you always have the RAW file hat you can push wherever you want later.

Use the 5 inche for best color and gamma settings. The EVF is warm and to bright... You tend to under expose with the EVF 1 to 2 stops, only because its so bright and crisp, Turning the brightness down does not help.
Or... just trust the histogram, not your eye when setting exposer through the EVF, the image will look over exposed, but its not...

Also dont worry to much your shooting in RAW, your colour temp is not an issue, you can be miles out... you can change it later. :) Good thing about shoot RAW over shooting PRORES or H264

Silly i know...

for color-sensitive work never trust any of these - not the RED LCD's and not the RED EVF's!
the only thing that works regarding this are external professional SDI monitors (can even be small ones, like TVlogic 5-7 inch or such)

I find the LCD most closely matches the images when I open them on a computer. It's not exact, but if it looks good on the lcd, then it looks great on a computer, and then when posted.

one of the "problems" here -> the LCD-brightness gets easily altered (often unintentionally while e.g. engaging 1:1 mapping) and often you don't have the time to compare that to the RCX picture on set...

Overall brightness doesn't change the ratios of lighting, and you shouldn't be exposing based on lcd brightness anyway. If you know what you are doing, and have been shooting with an EVF or an lcd for the past 20 years (or the past 5 if you are one of the new young kids) it is pretty straight forward.

Thanks guys for all your inputs

Thank you everyone for taking time and explaining the problem. MOst people suggested to use an SDI monitor. I have one and will try that out as well. Thanks once again.
