  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is RED watching this stuff?

This is the next generation of image capture for sure without question. I hope red is WIDE awake and working in redlabs w this tech.

It seems that this merely helps capture left eye, right eye data for 3D conversion. The trend has been to convert 2D to 3D lately. And this setup would help that. But real 3D capture is special. Planet of the Apes is true 3D capture. And Jurassic 4 will be true 3D capture.

More data is useful but this won't be a magic bullet. It's an optical system so if you point this at a white wall it'll be completely useless. It'll also probably be useless for greenscreen extraction since there is no depth interpolation system on earth that is sub-pixel accurate. Picture in your head a motion blurred arm. Now... imagine trying to triangulate any point on that smear. It's impossible. Or picture someone with human hair. How will you triangulate any point on a strand of hair from even a half dozen positions? Hair looks like hair looks like hair. And as you change perspective the highlights on the hair will move (hair is really shiny) so if you're looking for the exact same pixel color from a slightly different angle to triangulate the two views you won't find it--it doesn't exist. Or imagine a scene that's nice and contrasty with areas completely in shadow. How do you triangulate one black pixel to another? You can't? If I was doing stereo conversion I would of course welcome all the help I could get but this isn't really going to revolutionize anything. It will dramatically increase the amount of data to keep track of. I hope that the disparity/depth maps are calculated live but I suspect they're just tripling the data needed.

Again, cool tech and I could definitely see some applications but will still require a LOT of cleanup. Even with 4k stereo rigs you can't extract a very clean depth channel. I can't see how 2 1080p cameras could do any better. The only sensor tech I currently see on the horizon that could eliminate keying is lightfield.

If you want stereo... just shoot stereo.

I have did that before! I shot with 3D rigs and get the depth image in nuke by two eyes' footages, then use it with only one eye footage, for post-footage-rotation!(you can not simply rotate S3D clips.) This is really helping. But I do not think it should be widely use. Why not just use 3D rigs? It give you much more choice and accurate in most case. Post 2D-3D is good, but always not best choice.
