Shot on RED EPIC by DP Greg Wilson, will do a BTS post at http://nofilmschool.com soon. DIT was Tom Wong, we wanted a flatter look so we set it on-set based on redlogfilm and then graded from that, not applying a LUT or redgamma in post. 15K views in first 24 hours, Vimeo Staff Pick, front page of Indiewire and Filmmaker Magazine... hope you enjoy!

We all called in a lot of favors to make this happen on a budget (we were planning on using my SCARLET but then an EPIC showed up so... why not). We're really trying to drive traffic to http://manchildfilm.com as this is a direct release online -- no festivals -- and it's a prequel to my feature, which I've been working on for two years. So please share it around if you like it -- especially to anyone in the sports world. Thanks!

Fantastic short, Ryan. I really dig where you took the color grade. Much darker and more dramatic and moody than the frame grabs on the film's website. Good luck with the feature.

Really nice film and a great prequel.

congratulations on the staff pick!

Thanks Ryan -- yeah, the grabs on the website are brightened up for press purposes as anything looks dark on a white web page. Glad you guys like it!

Congratulations, Ryan.

NFS has become one of my daily stops on the internet. I don't always agree with your postings but I am always interested, entertained and informed.

That was really Sweet! Loved it keep up the good work! You're looking Good!

Ryan - you might want to fix the link to the manchild site (in your main body copy) - you missed out the 'd' :)

Looking good.

I like the writing, the acting, the pacing, a little bit of implied coercive threat in there for those who want to see it, a little bit of possible prior machination by the recruiter to bring on the crisis which will persuade the player to come on board, for those who would like to imagine it or try to outguess the writer. The twist with the affluent parents at the end and punchline was a good conclusion for a short film. I muchly enjoyed what you have done. The images do not draw attention away from the unfolding drama but transport it nicely. So too does the underscore.

Kudos for your actors who paid attention to good diction. I initially felt that your basketball star was overplaying the discomfort behaviour but for the twist conclusion, it became a perfect fit as the character's intended device to manipulate the recruiter.

I sincerely hope you get this one up and with your original cast too.

Thanks guys! Fixed Andy, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks Robert, glad to hear you appreciated all of those elements. A little discomfort was intended for the payoff.

re: lenses, Arri Alura zooms interior, Super Speeds outside.

Would be interesting to hear more about the shoot, on-set look development and post grading. Very interesting to hear that no LUT was applied in the post chain. There's been a lot of talk about LUT on Reduser lately and how you can't get 'correct' skin tones without transforming to the target color space.

Honestly this is some of the best footage I've seen from Red for my taste.

Thanks Brett! I misspoke as far as saying there was no LUT at all -- but we did not apply a LUT other than what came out of the camera in post. On set Greg, Tom and I made tweaks to the redlogfilm curve to give us a look we were happy with, and Tom loaded that in-camera -- it looks close to what you see in the finished short, and then in the grade we made adjustments to the look from the camera without changing the gamma space. If that doesn't make sense I'm sure Tom can correct me, and we'll get it right on nofilmschool!

Great job! Loved it.

Manchild is a turnoff name. -- don't Donnie Darko it

I will strongly disagree with that. I don't know much about the movie, but from what I do know, it fits the script perfectly. It's a million times better than something like Hoop Dreamz.

I think 'Manchild' is a clever name because it's curious, catchy and simple - it makes you wonder what's up with it. It's a little weird since it normally applied to men in a state of arrested development, but here its meaning in inverted; i.e. children expected to be men (and physically developed enough to be so mistaken). This prequel shows a man mistaking a young man for an innocent, treating him like a child and getting played for it, which makes for a nice antithetical lead-in.

And don't knock Donnie Darko! Superheroesque and contains alliteration - what more could you want for the subject?!
