  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Very useful video overview - thanks guys .... nice work from Team Finner ... quick question, we got totally swamped at our 4k workflow booth and didn't manage to make it up to the RED booth ... what's the latest news on their 4K Laser projector? ... price, spec and availability? ... I saw the 3D demo last year but have lost track of it since then.

One of the coolest things I did get to see (their booth was just up the hall from us) was a stunning wall sized 4K LED display from a Chinese company, Leyard ... watching the 4K imagery on their 20 foot video wall was really quite inspiring .... the attached photos taken with my iPad Mini do not do it justice:

Seems Red has shelved their Laser Projector for now. They weren't showing it at all. No mention of it.

Really? ... are you sure? ... got the impression at last year's NAB (2012) that it was a big deal and they were close to shipping ... we really could do with a reasonably priced 4K projector for our '4K MADE EASY' Training Day .... is there an alternative? ... what are people using for 4K projection?

We demoed the latest 4K EIZO monitor at NAB 2013 .... very cool .... totally accurate color calibration and only $2700 ... we'll have a couple at the Training Day event but could do with a cost effective 4K projector (under $20,000) to complement the Eizo monitors and 2K DLP projector ... all suggestions are welcomed.

Ted from RED gave an interview on it (for fxphd ), he said something like they are working on it but it's not up to their standards yet. Doing mass market stuff like this is tricky and i'm sure they are going through a learning curve.
 
When I asked about the projector I was told it was on the low priority list. Dragon and Redray were at the top, and the projector was waiting until the resources could be redirected to it. One of the interesting things was that the Red theatre wasn't using the red projector. So I don't think much had progressed with it lately.

I don't think the ?Barco? projector being used was a true 4k projector either. Fine details hadwhat looked like interlacing artifacts. Very strange. Wobulation maybe?

Wow ... did I miss something over this last year or what? ... at NAB 2012 I got the distinct impression that this was a big deal for the RED guys ... what are they pushing for 4K projection now?

I don't want to de-rail this thread - the video reports from the Finner Team were really good - thanks guys ... but is there a 4K projector (under $20k) that people are using and liking?

I believe they were displaying 4K Barco projectors at the RED theatre this year. If you remember last year they only got 2k up and running with their prototype and yes I heard as well that it was put on the back burner so they could focus on all of the other projects they needed to get out. Which I'm thankful for. I'd rather have my Dragon sensor then a projector I'd probably never buy.
 
Oh and you are guys are welcome. We try our best every year to shoot a bunch of video from NAB. There was just two of us this year. Colin and myself. Finner had a baby on the Saturday so obviously couldn't come this year.

My impression is that everything was taking longer to develop then expected, so they had to pull resources away from the projector project. I think once Dragon is in people's hands, we will see some more developments.

Right now though, I don't know of any 4k projectors that are in that sort of price range. Sorry!

In the three or so weeks since we arrived in Las Vegas for NAB, our channel has received 10,000 views!
