  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

It is a shame that more companies do not put the customer first. I cannot tell you how many times we make decisions at RED because someone repeats what Jim and Jarred say all the time - "Put yourself in the customer's shoes." We know we cannot please everyone all the time, but it does not stop us from trying to do so.

Will the new Dragon OLPF have better IR protection as promised?

The Motion Mount is a great product - but it would be great if the new OLPF will also have better IR protection.
I remember reading that we won't need IR filters anymore once we upgrade to Dragon. Hope that's still the case!

Thanks for the hard work!
George

+1 on that

For Anamorphic mode... just know that it is 3+K tall times whatever anamorphic you use. So 2:1 anamorphic is 6K by 3K.

Jim

That's a bit confusing (took me a moment to figure out what you were saying)... If you are using 2X anamorphics then the sensor area used for 2.40 is 1.20, so assuming a 3K height that would be a 3.6K width... You're only going to get a 6K width if you shoot spherical and crop vertically to 2.40, assuming the Dragon sensor is not 4x3 but is wider in shape.

Would love to have in 4K, 3K ,2K also 2.4:1 please !
Can't wait to get mine working Dragon in my hands

I'm desperate to see some footage from our awesome new sensor!!! Something that shows how it handles low light situations, and shows the latitude too.

I still wonder whats the reason to go from a 1,89 aspect ratio on the MX sensor to 1,95 for the Dragon?

In my world the closer we can get to 1.0 in aspect ratio (6144x6144) the better and just crop it depending on situation. Is it a huge cost issue? I hope it isnt a continuing trend with sensor design going more and more towards a 2,0 in aspect ratio.

Brent, gotta say that although you guys are lightyears ahead when it comes to the technology and science, personally it is your guys customer service that makes you all the best company on the planet. James (my bomb squad rep) deserves an academy award for all his help. (do they offer those?)

What David said.

I figure shooting for 2x Anamorphic lenses the resolution should be 3792 x 3160.

Which, for the record, is 1.8 times MORE PIXELS than shooting anamorphic 2x lenses on an Alexa 43 sensor in ARRI RAW. Almost TWICE the over-all resolution.

Shooting with 2x Anamorphic lenses on Dragon would give you over 11.9 million pixels total resolution*
Shooting with spherical lenses and cropping to 2.40 on Dragon would give you over 15.7 million pixels total resolution*

* (1) assuming the 2x anamorphic lenses chosen cover the 1.2 center square area Dragon sensor (2) give or take a few pixels depending how RED defines exact resolution settings.

Ted's NAB Interview On DCS website

For those that couldn't make it to NAB, you might be interested to check out an interview with Ted Schilowitz streaming from the Digital Cinema Society website:

http://www.digitalcinemasociety.org/

It was shot Monday morning at the RED booth in the first 15 minutes of NAB 2013 and primarily covers the Dragon Sensor and the new Rocket-X. You'll also get a look at the clean room they set up at NAB to demonstrate the upgrade process.

Sending the Epic-X / Scarlet-X Cameras in for upgrade...

Sending the Epic-X / Scarlet-X Cameras in for upgrade...

If we have a FMJ top plate on our epics, can we send in our epic with it installed for the Dragon upgrade, or do we need to go back to the original top plate before sending the camera in for the upgrade?

If you still have the original top plate, I think it's a good idea to put it back. If you haven't just send it in with no top plate.

Red will likely have to remove your FMJ top plate to upgrade and will then have to keep track of it, and remember to replace it before return. Not that they would lose it, but with the mass of cameras they will have to be upgrading, it's wise not to leave anything on your camera that could get lost and not be easily replaced.

Could have benefited from some HDRx in part of it. '-)

Really capsulizes RED NAB for those of us who couldn't make it. Thank you much James and the Digital Cinema Society.

Then, if you not just saying it, but actually mean it, please release the proper LUT for RLF2Rec709. For years scores of users had been asking about it, but so far... crickets

Dear RED,

Please take your time getting the color and highlight roll off right on the Dragon. Clearly, you guys were rushed to get something together for NAB and with lack of Dragon footage to show, you opted to show us sensors being installed. Now that the time pressure of NAB is off, please don't release anything that is not 100% finished and awesome. Every day I shoot with my Epic I am pleased with the images. The only thing I want more out of this camera at the moment is range in the highlights and better color. I don't really need anything else. I can wait a long time if what you release is going to be amazing and totally 100% solid and ready. Thanks!

Isn't that just a standard Cineon -> Rec709 LUT?

If that's the case, than it should be quicker/easier for RED to throw it up in the support section. I'm with Blackstone on this; it should be made available to REDusers regardless of how close RG3 is supposed to be.

So is RLF2Rec709 = to Red Log Film 2 - Rec709?

+1, plus take your time getting the lowlight noise the best it can be.
