  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R E M E M B E R i N G...

It's a surreal experience sitting in my hotel in North Sumatra watching NAB unfold on-line. Every RED announcement makes me feel like a smart investor. I'm happy to see my camera grow into something more then I imagined, rather then be replaced like all my previous cameras I have ever owned. Sure wish I could be at NAB right now!

But yea, as Steve said, even so usually an alliance in gear purchases would see that gear shared equally, I instead have almost completely taken over that very precious baby, but it is only so, thanks to Steve's immense generosity, and the fact that at that time He was heavily occupied with projects that did not included the need for a camera, and by the time He did needed one, well, He already had multiple Epic-X cameras, so M8 stayed with me in Italy, and for that I thank again my now very good friend Steve... ;)

It has worked out great! You've taken fantastic care of the camera and the fashion and other shots I've seen you get with it have been beautiful! It is a very good arrangement that has worked out very well for both of us ;)

Really miss having you here Ketch, I will carry your spirit with me throughout the show, at least to the best of my ability ;-)

Wanted to add the legendary Charles Papert, SOC who did steadicam testing with us at LART to that roster of really amped up camera nerds having way to much fun. Deepest thanks to Gibby for inviting me. Among other things I got to see Lucas riff up a DJ groove while he was running all our rushes through Scratch. LART was also the first time I met David Mullen who, as it turns out, is a five tool player - he really is that nice - humble and gracious, he is an encyclopedia of cinematography, generous with that knowledge, manages to be both a technical master and fluid in his choices as a DP - in the 15 episodes I've seen of Smash he has managed to keep the coverage of the dance sequences fresh, and that can't be easy.

Big shout out to my cohort at LART, Brook Willard, who really is a rock star - I even managed to drag him to Russia with me in 2008 to shoot when I DP-ed the Sex Pistols on tour. We had 2 RedOnes, the 300mm RED prime for shooting from out by the mixer in the middle of the house and Brook standing on the bass bin with the original RED 18-50 IIRC - plus my bastard Mk2SuperSpeed set (25,50,85). Most insane part is that we were shooting monster takes (over an hour) to spinning media (RedDrive) with a very serious vibration issue caused by the sound levels (Brook's tripod is ON the bass bin at the first show!) it was nuts but we got some classic bits along the way and 99% of what we shot was usable even with the dropped frame issues.

Cheers - #19

I agree - NAB without Ketch there will really seem strange ;(

Charles Papert was the only LART invitee I somehow left out of the list! Yes, he is way talented and did some exceptional Steadicam work for our crew at LART. Wish he spent more time here on Red User. I've now added his name to my original post of who attended LART. His input would be way valuable. I met Charles many years ago when both of us were moderators for the DVInfo board. I was also simultaneously at the time a moderator for the old DVX User Red Forum, which was dissolved in January 2006 when Jarred opened up Red User.

C-ya at NAB braddah Blarir!

Your camera work deserves the praise!

I'll definitely give your "Hi!" to everyone at Red, and Red User members I run into

Blair it was nice meeting you at the reduser event. Steve nice meeting you at the red booth.

!

Thank you for the kind words Steve. I left the world of Steadicam behind for good about 3 years ago and have been full time as a DP since. Finishing up the third season of the Comedy Central series "Key & Peele". Blair I'm sure remembers putting together the R1 packages for the live performance portion of the pilot! FYI Blair, we now shoot the multicam stuff on F800's and the sketches with Alexas.

I'm finding myself on the various message boards less and less as there seems to be a slow but steady movement away from discussing the craft of filmmaking or even cinematography in general in favor of technical minutiae...turn of the tide, I guess. Or perhaps those who have interesting things to say are doing it on their blogs instead, which seems to garner greater exposure. Either way, the business, she is a'changin'...

be well, all!

Awesome post. Thanks for sharing guys. Steve, you might not even realize it but you were my first and still most valuable resource when I stepped into digital cinema and began this foray with RED. As Ketch says, it's good to pin point those moments and you were certainly one for me.

Thank you.
