  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic lover shoots on Canon 1D C

8 bit does suck, but definitely knowing it's limitations will save your ass. Most of the limitations can easily be overcome in a studio setting, but I'm so glad I have finally left those days of 8Bit behind. In time 4K in this 1DC form factor will be the norm and I hope at least 10bit will be standard too.

Come on, 8-bit is not a drama, to make money with pictures or having footage to make money is another discussion, though :-) Sometimes, I wonder myself about the filmmakers I see to present themselves in this way at business card... I am not including the professionals who help other people (not necessarily only professionals, still artists) to be moviemakers but who creates a project from scratch.

At $12,000 a pop it's an affordable camera? What am I missing? You want affordable camera, get BMCC or better yet, BT Red MX.
Both are great choices but not as same as recording with cheap $250 media... affordable batteries, etc ;)

Also, 8 bits are not the main issue, compressed 8 bits + DSLR body compression efficiency are.
But DSLR form factor counts ;-)

You was in Belgrade and You didn't call. Damn it man! :)
Btw your pm inbox is full.
Filip, it was in the way to Podgorica, travelling with other people on November 22 from Zagreb, I already previously knew which two locations to shoot during the night without permit, therefore, the DSLR form factor ; ) on November 24, we had the flight from Tivat to Moscow, so you see... Next time, we'll personally see each other for sure, thanks for your love and heads up!

E :-)

PS: PM box is free now :)

Agree wholeheartedly.

This little doc made me smile.

Great job.

Thanks guys. I have to say I do stand by the 1DC for now, despite its inadequacies, for my specific needs. Small, self-contained, rugged. American ingenuity (Red) in a more complete camera in this size, does have an opportunity in this niche.

Charming portrait of a gentle lady, thanks! If the 1DC was cheaper i would be tempted to use one mainly as a stills camera, with the option of filming if needed, and used carefully, without too high expectations. Maybe in the future with a price drop and second hand.

Yeah. The Canon is clean, but we know the issues there.
The Sony is REALLY clean...cleaner than my personal Scarlet for sure...easily as clean or cleaner than the Epic I use all the time.

More importantly (for me), its raw....and not proprietary "I need a $5K turbo boost card" or "I need $2K+ SSD capture media" raw, but a very similar (maybe to similar?) raw format thats been opened to GPU's so a reasonable human's computer can edit and work with it.

One (high end) colorist's consensus... its "smooth as butter."

Yep. Hmmm.

I love my cam, I really do, but that Dragon thing needs to be good, fast, and fairly priced. The workflow also really needs to start getting reasonable... Apples are comparing to apples now.

I can't say much about the 1DC since I haven't used one but having been stuck in the 8-bit world for a majority of my filmmaking shoots, the only problem I've ever had in grading is with anything red in the picture, gets pixelated immediately. As far as the 1DC's image, it always struck me as noisy even way back to the original NAB demo footage. Why Canon would opt for 8-bit in an increasingly RAW world I don't know.

Noisy? Really?
Compared to what?
Certainly blows the C300 out of the water

Fuck the camera, this was great.. I stopped thinking about what camera and more about her.. Everything about your video was great.. Just don't use post image stabilization!!!!! The only thing I hated was that wobble, I'll take shaky handheld!!

Your opening was fucking stellar, the use of foreground was so enjoyable..

Thank you.

Great film.
We just received the 1DC on Friday. It will act as our b-cam on our next project. We are leaving for Kamchatka in a week and when we started testing our camera we had a lot of crackling noise on ever shot. Support seems to think our sound card is probably defect! It's impossible to get hold of a replacement as the camera is back ordered for weeks. Did you have any sound issues with yours?
Other than that (and the price tag) it seems like a very capable camera in a very small package.

I recorded partly solo with a Rode Video Mic on camera and partly with a sound engineer who recorded dual sound on a Marantz 661. The former needed much more processing in post. But no, there was no crackling sound reported by my sound guy. He's a sensitive, meticulous guy, so I'd go bu his word.

You can't miss the crackling sounds I'm hearing. It really looks like the sound card in the camera is gone for good

I tested the 1D-C recently. The Motion Jpeg compression of the 4k mode definitely gave quite a bit of artifacting. CanonLog, however yielded a really high dynamic range that graded nicely in Resolve. It's a nice small camera that would be ideal when you need something with almost no weight. I preferred the image out of my Epic but no surprise there.

Is somebody going to do one of those Hitler youtube videos now? Where Hitler sulks because the 1D-C is out and he still hasn't received his Black Magic Digital Cinema Camera, and even changed the order to the micro 4/3rds version, further delaying it :)

I shot underwater with the Canon 1Dc recently. Major banding caused by the 8bit codec and you cannot use the Canon Log with AF which eliminates it from being used in an underwater housing. Great concept - poorly executed. The Canon 1Dx is the best action stills camera made. ISO 6400 and 12fps raw, with full auto focus.

I guess you can't even record 4K with autofocus. Anyway, in post you can always upsample to a 10-bit 4:2:2 format such as Cineform Intermediate...

I recently shot some test footage with a 1DC and am pleasantly surprised by how well the image holds up at high ISO's. The following was shot at 64,000 ISO with virtually no noise visible!

Also disagree with the comments on how difficult it is to grade 8bit footage, though not RAW, the MJPEG codec is light years ahead of the H.264 codecs used on the 5D2-3 etc especially when using Canon Log.
