  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple push to win back pro editors

I'm content with the direction fcpx is heading. It's far more mature than the original FCP ever was. Yes it needs messaging but I cannot edit the old way anymore. I learned to embrace it, and now I can't even bare to open premiere files. I don't want this to be another nauseating "I hate everything apple" thread again.

Agreed Bob. I recently used it on smaller projects and it has some really great things going for it. I think one can edit really fast with it

Bob, I'm editing a commercial right now on x with basic compositing. Its been a nightmare. The "main storyline" thing is really annoying. For example, I'm making this commercial with some old archive footage and am figuring out the "feel" of it. "Select all" doesn't seem to work and shift click doesn't work with certai clips that have a "blac k outline thing" connecting them together. No tracks means I'm struggling to have precise control of my edit, and not having the possibility to create separate tracks like in every other editor is a big, big disappointment. But its incredibly fast, specially for 4k 5k...

Sergio, I was frustrated at first too and I think it's because we expect it to work a certain way. It's like learning to ride a bike again, when you feel," why on earth should I learn again when it was fin the first time". It's worth the time investment to learn it. It was for me anyway. Good luck man.

it may sound stupid but I tried iMovie for a very small project recently and for the money you pay for it (like 20-25 Dollar?) it's a pretty good app (stuff is "small" when it comes to the footprint and you're limited a bit but it's fine for all the "basics")!
Since FCPX borrowed many stuff from iMovie I can see where this is going and I think with some "polishing" it will end up a a really good solution at some point. You have to learn "new" ways of editing tho...

10.0.8 was just released as well right now. Also some new updates to prores codecs it seems

While I am happy they have fixed many of the original problems, I still think a lot of post houses will have a bad taste in their mouth for a while... At least they support high end codecs for cine usage though... Its seeming less prosumer by the moment, but being two years late kind of sucks. They would of avoided the problem had they released it now, or like even a year ago. Apple shouldn't rush stuff when it ends up biting them like this did... Personally I use Avid and Adobe now, but I will move back to FCP(X) if clients ever need it...

They are making even those of us that had FCP 1.25 hard to maintain interest. We purchased a copy of FCPX, tried it, ditched it. Went back to 7, then invested in Adobe. No no Mac Pros, even if the software was OK, what are we supposed to run it on ? I love iMacs with Thunderbolt and have several but they are not a replacement for a configureable tower box.

No one will be happier than me if Apple sort out a new mac pro.

With the way desktops sell these days I tell you we're lucky if they release a new Mac Pro at all...

I'm glad FCPX came out, otherwise I wouldn't have ever tried Premiere Pro. Can't ever look back now.

Premiere certainly has many good sides to it, but I'm amazed that you could never look back. I use both, mostly premiere for the last year, but I think the future lies with FCPX. It really feels like going back in time every time I go from FCPX to premiere.
But I could be wrong of course ;-)

Once bitten, twice shy.

I'm a FCPX fan. Just wrote a thread about my editing nightmare but oddly enough, I hear the same nightmares in blogs on Premiere. Not a fan of Avid or Vegas...not sure why.

Just after they pulled all the macpros from eu stores with no replacement.

The current Mac Pros were discontinued in the because of EU rules, if they do have a new Mac Pro on the way then redeveloping them for a few months of sales probably isn't worth the money. Plus Mac Pros are still available shops have been allowed to continue to sell stock and aparently said stocks were supposed to last through April at least.

Given the state of the Mac Pro line as long as new ones appear around or before the summer then this shouldn't be an issue. There's been neglect for to long.

Running FCPX on a i7 3770K hackintosh overclocked to 4.8ghz. It's the best of both worlds. Super fast, super cheap, and super upgradeable. And I can even dual boot and play all my video games on the windows side  I'll probably never buy a real mac ever again with the quality of these hack pro builds.
