  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Video Waveform on Epic Monitor?

Waveform option would be great. Why the heck not. Use it if you want to. You could have the option to toggle raw or not. More options help, not hurt. And it's a pro camera, so we should all want options...

Seriously... don't know why some Reduser's get so defensive about requests... It's generally not constructive at all.

Yes, I know there are stop lights and a Red version of a waveform on the Red LCDs, and yes I can do a pretty good job exposing with them, but I feel even more comfortable exposing with a waveform that has percentages and a left to right (of the image) range.

I'd love to know if including this sort of popular waveform is in the plans of additions for Red. Maybe someone from the Red team could chime in?

Thanks.

Welcome to reduser, where all feature requests are ridiculed and you are told that what you want, you don't need.

Um. Not really.

Many of these discussions happened on reduser five years ago when the RED one was released and discussed. My post was not ridiculing anyone. It was simply stating the exposure tools that are available and in a sense why they replace a waveform monitor. In those original discussions these were the kinds of answers (and logic) given by RED.

Im sure if a waveform were possible it would have been done by now, but because red is a raw capture device and invented the DSMC system they also needed a more accurate way to monitor the signal so they went with the tools they have now.

I am not anti waveform, but when I understood the tools that do exist, what they do and the fact they tell me what the raw sensor is capturing and not the metadata, then I choose to adopt those tools as the most accurate way of judging exposure. At the time this was all being discussed many DP's wanted the existing red tools over a traditional waveform because of how much more accurate they are.

A waveform might be convenient, but is just not as accurate as the histogram or exposure check when dealing with raw capture.

Its all in the manual in a downloadable PDF file from red.com.

I do believe that if you make your living making images then you need to understand the quirks of each tool you use to get the best out if it. Last week the OP started a thread complaining about buggy scarlet cameras and had not done a prep day before the shoot. He is not an owner operator and it seems he just expects red cameras to have all the options that every other camera has and is here asking questions and learning.

I replied with what tools are available on board with red cameras.
