  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Transfer Rate Tests (USB 3, SSD, eSATA SSD Dock, 2x SSD RAID 0, NAS etc)

2x SONNET RAID5

2x SONNET RAID5

With two Sonnets and 8x2TB disks in each. When Mercury Viper SSD comes out we plan to reach 4000-5000 MB/sec (30-40 Gbit /sec) from one set of 8 SSD raided.

what rez playback do you get in RCX and CS6?

ahem...It's not a RED machine-yet, serves Resolve/FCPX/arriraw/4k (3xGTX680 in Cubix). But RED is definitely in the plans.

I could give you a few R3Ds to play with and you could download RCX. No Premiere?

..?

Lending the cards would be nice but we are on the other side of the big pond.
Sure we have CS6. What would you like us to test with this double Sonnet RAID?
It can be on Macpro 12-core or Supermicro 16-core. Cubix with 3x680gtx can be attached to either.
We generally want to avoid investing in redrockets if other solutions are workable.
4x GTX Titans are on order for the Supermicro station.

I realized the previous image of the test window (2x Sonnet with 8x2TB each) was almost illegible. Here it's bigger.

We haven't tested 4k yet, but 10 bit 4096x2160 RGB should be ca 800Mbyte/sec (SI).

The double Sonnet RAID should deliver 30-35 fps.

Playback resolution. What resolution do you get smooth playback of 5k R3D material? 1/2? Probably not full but who knows?

Test on the Mac Pro please.

Thanks in advance for doing this.

any luck?

We'll try that at the weekend at the latest.
To make sure what you are looking for:
--to test Red 5k decompression and debayer by Macpro 12-core with 1300mbyte/sec storage using CS6 and NO redrocket

We haven't done red yet (good to start finally) and I have a question about the significance of the fast storage in that case.
Red 5k will be compressed and the needed bandwidth for storage adequatly smaller:100-300 mbyte/sec .
(The full 5k DPX might indeed stretch the storage speed.)

CS6 will not use the full 3x gtx680 power in that case

What are you after in this test?

Thanks Robert.

Yeah, just trying to see if very fast storage like yours will speed up CS6 and RCX playback to 1/2 or Full resolution without a RR card.

So you got extremely fast storage and 3 video cards. Maybe you could try two tests. One with the video cards and one without?

MacPro and Redcode 5K (Premiere CS6, Resolve)

MacPro and Redcode 5K (Premiere CS6, Resolve)

Very tentative results. It's the first time we played with R3D on our machine.
R3D 5k (5120x2700). www.footage-online.de/free/red-footage.html
The test file is small (7 seconds, 600MB) so most likely it gets cached in RAM.
In fact the speed of storage probably does not matter here as we got the same results for all three kinds tested.

MacPro 12-core/64GB RAM/Quadro fx5600/ML 10.8.2,
(3 kinds of storage were tested :Sonnet2x 1300Mbyte/sec read RAID5 ,
3xSSD internal 600Mbyte/sec read, xsan/fc 420 Mbyte/sec read)

RESOLVE: full res--7fps
1/2 res--22 fps
1/4 res--23fps
PREMIERE: ful res--unwatchable
1/2 almost good
1/4 perfect

Then we attached CUBIX with 3x gtx680

RESOLVE: ful res 21-22 fps even when adding nodes of blur
1/2 res 22-23fps
PREMIERE: same performance as without Cubix

Next week we'll try longer/bigger clip to saturate RAM.
Also we'll try to put gtx680 as the main GPU to see if Premiere improves with it.
There are some glitches to work out too (with Cubix, cards etc)

tests with gtx680 as GUI

tests with gtx680 as GUI

We put the gtx680 in the place of the old quadroFX GUI card in the Macpro.
With the same 600mb/7sec r3d 5k clip:

Resolve (no Cubix) full res 16fps
Resolve (cubix 2x680gtx) full res 24fps

Premiere reacts to the 680gtx in the GUI slot improving the quality of playback.
With the old QuadroFX it dropped a lot of frames in half-res. With gtx680 it plays smoothly,
no dropped frames. Adobe says you need PP 6.0.2/3 to utilize the powers of gtx680.

The clip was still only 600Mb and probably all got cached in RAM, so storage speed played no role in the playback quality.

Next we'll test with a long clip to saturate RAM and see storage speed influence on playback.
Finally we'll test our Supermicro windows station. Maybe the GtxTitans will arrive by then.

So far the tests look promising and work on 5k R3d files seems possible without redrocket cards.

Robert,

You are the man! If we ever meet, the drinks are on me. Thank you for taking the time to detail the tests.

So conclusions?

Without a RR, FULL REZ, is not happening?

I believe the magic number is 300 MB/S Read/Write or higher. With FW800 drives, 80MB/S, you really see the difference editing in Premiere. Not just in playback resolution but the responsiveness of the program.

It's good to note that from 300 MB/S to 1300 MB/S there is no gain.

This conclusion would be good for the current 12-core Macpro with max RAM (64GB), GTX680 4GB as GUI/GPU, 400mbyte/sec storage (my slowest -SAN/FC).
Quadro K5000 or Radeon 7970 are not likely to better gtx680, Titan will not work.
Frankly, half-res for editing in PP6 and full-res grading in Resolve 9 seems a good workflow, one that does not call for RR, which I hear may cause additional problems in configuration.
PS. Your 80 Mbyte/sec storage may be problematic for 5k redcode which I believe in 6:1 compression nears 100Mbyte/sec.
PS.PS. Premiere cs6 works with gtx680 but apparently this is the only Kepler GPU it does. My theory is Apple pushed Adobe to enable the new iMac for GPU acceleration (gtx680mx) and that's all for now. We have to wait for CS7 for more.

We still need to test our new Supermicro station. Unexpected glitches with GPUs (Quadro k5000 and gtx680) slow us down.
That station has top Xeons, 192GB RAM and provided our GPU problems are solved might improve on the Macpro results.
Especially with GTXTitan as GUI/GPU and CS7. We might see real time there, I hope. As the last resort we'll try Nvidia maximus (K5000 + Tesla k20). Anything to avoid redrocket.

Robert,

You are running OS X, not Windows, correct?
