  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey, I'm new to the RED ONE and I have tried to shoot in slow motion but when I imported into FCP it was regular footage. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Can anybody please explain the process of setting up the camera so it shoots in slow motion?

Describe your settings and perhaps someone can help you.

It sounds like you are changing the project timebase instead of the Frame rate. They are two different things.

Sensor - Varispeed - Framerate or Timelapse
Gives you the ability to do slo-mo or timelapse.

System - Project - Configure - Time base
Change the FPS of your project.
 
You shot the footage at 120fps so if you drop it into a final cut timeline set to 24fps, it will be slow motion. Again, I am assuming that you shot at 120fps and are using Final cut.
 
Still can't find a pattern I have to follow to shoot in slow motion. How do I shoot the footage in 120FPS? The FPS settings in Varispeed only go up to 25fps and stop there. My frame rate is 24.00. If I go to timelapse then all it does is allow me to change my shutter. Can anybody please post a step by step process that they use to shoot a higher FPS? and can you please include the settings which factor into the resulting motion speed?

It could be that your project settings and media aren't compatible with the speed you want to achieve.

That is - you will need to set up for 2K 2:1 with a hard drive to be able to capture 120fps (I believe). If you are in 4K 16:9 with a CF card - you wont be able to go past 25fps.
 
Thanks for your replies and for reading. So far I have come to the understanding that the RED ONE can shoot at 120FPS only at 2k 2:1 AND I need a HDD to do it well. Is this correct?

Yes, the 120fps ability is only available with the windowed 2k mode. Keep in mind that your lenses will appear longer when you go into this mode (Way longer btw, I forget the conversion rate but the lenses will be longer than double the original focal length. Example, your 50mm prime will have the field of view of around a 135mm lens. If you plan on shooting high speed a lot, rent Super 16 lenses.)
 
Also you can shoot at 120fps on a 16GB CF card but remember that you also need to use RC28 instead of RC36 compression as well as the comments about 2K 2:1.
 
2k 2:1 @ rc36 maxes out at 105fps.

No disrespect but doesn't anyone read the manual anymore?

This info is all clearly and easly layed out in the manual. they even have cool little charts....

Take a few min and look thru it, it's really not that long or complicated.
 
Resurrecting an old thread, but I’m new to RED as well and am having trouble with this. Varispeed is set to 100 fps, but the time base is normal (24fps). Am I doing something wrong in post? I’m exporting to ProRes from REDCINE-X. Is there a setting I am missing?

We need more information. Does it play back in slow motion in Redcine-X Pro?

No, it doesn’t. In camera, all I did was change REDCODE to 28, and resolution to 2K 2:1. Then I went to Varispeed and changed the fps to 100. Do I need to do something else?

Can you post a picture of your LCD display when you think you have correctly selected everything for slow motion? From your description of what you did, that should work. As it doesn't, something isn't set right!
