  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony has posted an update regarding the legal action.

Sony Comments re Patent Suit Filed By Red Digital Cinema

On February 12, 2013, Red Digital Cinema ("Red") sued Sony Corporation of America and Sony Electronics Inc. and alleged that the Sony PMW-F5, PMW-F55, and F65 digital cinema cameras infringe two Red patents. The F65 has been commercially available for over a year and the F5 and F55 were announced in October, 2012.

Sony has now had an opportunity to study Red's complaint and the asserted patents, and categorically denies Red's allegations. Sony intends to defend itself vigorously in the Red lawsuit. Sony looks forward to prevailing in court, thus vindicating the Sony engineers who developed Sony's quality digital cinema cameras.

Bit sad this is how business is done these days. It is not enough to do well for yourself, you also have to make sure that others cannot compete. Not aimed at Red, if tables were turned I have no doubt Sony et al would do the same to Red.

Just think of it as a video game with lawyers as the players.
 
I kind of thought Sony's cameras resembled an Alexa more so then a Red. Sure things are modular like 4K record or batteries but not exactly a new idea. Perhaps it's something within the camera like certain chips or a Red logo inside...hee, hee.. Anyhow, I agree with Pat. Glad I make art not technology.

I think the F55 is aimed squarely at the Alexa and TV production, if you ask me. I'm not saying that Red isn't a competitor, just that it looks to me like Sony developed this camera for a specific market, and tailored the workflow to be as simple and easy as possible. It's interesting to me that all the "new" Alexa models also streamline the workflow and make the simul Raw & DNxHD copies with zero muss and fuss. It would seem for them, it's all about making post fast, not about how many pixels they can cram into the camera.
 
Doesnt the Alexa get used in a ton of big feature films? Yes, yes it does...how many oscar noms were shot on Red?

I do respect all of your comments, although I feel some of you are speaking about something that you unfortunately may not know much about. RED is protecting themselves and their technology. If another person figured out how your invented technology works and uses it without permission, wouldn't you be a little upset too, no matter how big that person is?

I believe RED is doing the right thing, and I also hope this case ends more quickly than it started.
 
I look at Sony's response from a holistic viewpoint. For instance, I try to imagine what the lawyers and engineers were telling upper management. The engineers were probably defending their use of the technology in question while the lawyers could possibly be thinking they needed to justify their place in the corporate hierarchy and voted to defend rather than settle. Later on if the case appears to be going against them, they can always try to settle.

The lawyers and engineers probably aren't thinking this way consciously but the subconscious has a survival mode, even in today's altered natural way of living.

And management? Well, they can't admit they may have mishandled their duties as protector of the stockholder's assets, so they put their eggs in the 'defend' basket.

This is of course supposition, but I can see this as a perfectly human approach to answering the lawsuit. All I'm saying is the human element is as big a part of this suit, probably from both sides, as the technical details of the lawsuit itself. On top of that, throw in the human element of the jury and this has the makings of a John Grisham/Michael Crichton co-authored novel.

Most of this year's oscar noms were shot on analog film, what's your point again?

Paul, curiosity has finally gotten the best of me and I have to ask... why do you often promote Alexa and even Sony IIRC some of your past posts, and at the same time you seem to be sticking it to RED, while your signature says you own 2 Epic Ms? Doesn't this go against your business model?
