Hello great collective mind of RedUser,

I'm spec'ing Scarlet packages for a university, and they're going to need follow focus systems. There seem to be a terrible number of them floating around out there, and I've no experience with most of them. This being a university, I'm not going to be able to sell them on the price tags of Arri, Chrosziel or Oconnor. I think we're aiming for $1000ish (less is better). So who can recommend a high quality, somewhat rugged but inexpensive FF system? Only graduate students will be using the gear, but it's still going out with non-professionals, so keep that in mind.

Thanks,
Frazer

tilta and lanparte (both chinese companies) have pretty sturdy FF for the money. I own the lanparte myself and while it has some quirks. (mainly the tightening knob on the side). I'm happy with my purchse. I use it with my scarlet on a daily basis.

Tilta and Lanparte here too – and we are an arts university.

I like the LETUS one i got and so do my AC's, only 799 and its gear box flips for nikon's focus direction, no reversing gear needed. feels sturdy and has weight to it.

Check out the Edelkrone Focus One Pro…

that one does seem cool, but i would say its for personal use, honestly i wouldnt say this if i didnt care, it doesnt look like anything we would use professionally and i think that students should have something more traditional. as well, the one thing i see i dont like about that one is that it goes on one rod, that is not really sturdy enough. i have tried a few like that, i think the first ikan worked that way and it was just not stable, any quick move or jerk and it cant shift ever so slightly. now that i think of it, i would find a used arri or chroziel one, then maybe the oconnor one people like, then letus, then redrock.
for the kids man!

i've had my shoot35 follow focus for probably 3+ years now and it works great, no complaints. Finally moving into the world of Wireless FF's but i'm keeping it around for use on a 2nd rig or when wireless doesn't make sense.

Chroziel.

"personal use"?
"it doesnt look like anything we would use professionally"?
"students should have something more traditional"?

so, you HAVE used this brand then right?

Not to knock other brands, there are some really excellent units out there, but this is a solid piece of kit at an amazing price. One-bar mount has been rock solid on either run-and-gun bumpy doco work or controlled-set environments. It is not a cheap chinese-knock-off but a very high quality rig. It also happens to be at an amazing price. By all means pay 2x, 5x + more $ if you like. You just don't have to....
