Hi,

I'm after some, truly free, stock footage of cities around the world (various - asia, europe, south america). It's for an idiegogo project. I'm not being paid for it, but considering it's nature, I guess you could say it is for profit? Not that they have any money what so ever right now.

It would be for about 8 seconds of the video. 1080p is fine. Have had a pretty big search on the internet but nothing is quite at the level I was hoping for.

If anyone has any links, or ideas, I'm all ears.

Thanks

If you sign up at Pond5.com you can download their weekly free stock footage clip. I just downloaded the new one today and it's a macro shot of ants but they post a wide variety of different clips week to week. During Christmas they release a slew of stock media for free download as well, although I understand your need is immediate. I sell stock media on there as well and my prices are usually less than $20 if that helps.

What do you expect for free stock footage...no kidding its not going to be at the quality your looking for. The point is, if you or the people that are producing this project are going to make money they should pay for some stock footage. Do you think this footage just magically appears out of thin air. If you don't want to pay for it from someone else, you should fly your ass out there with some gear and shoot the stuff yourself. That would sound about right. This is coming from someone that makes part of his living selling stock footage and getting hounded by people like you wanting to use something for nothing.

* International locations (Asia, Europe, South America, etc.)
* Free (like, 'truly free')
* 1080p
* Highest level than that which is out there

Did I miss anything else?

All I have to say is good luck with that one. ::thumbs up::

I don't really know what to say to you. If any part of my post offended you, well shit. Did you miss the part where I'm all ears to ideas? It was a simple question, not an open demand to the world. I don't work with stock footage, and have little knowledge of the field, therefore asked the question about it's availability. If that warrants you to speak to me like an asshole, then I'll be damned.

Thanks.. Chaz. Looks like luck was on my side, because I did indeed find some. Turns out there are some great photographers/cinematographers out there who share their work just for the love of it. It's kind of what I was going for, just some good natured people looking to help someone out whose not making any money on a project.

Think about it for a second guys, I'm not making any money, they don't have any money. I thought it was obvious why I'd be asking for some help on a great community forum. Was very surprised at some of these responses

And then there's this...

I'm right beside you mate. I'm only one year into my working life and I've just invested in something that costs around 60% of my yearly wage.

But I believe in myself to use this to make some amazing art. I'll turn it into profit within 6 months, then the fun begins. Trust in your vision.

It's just money. Remember to live life.

Well you thinking that someone's hard work is for free is the wrong type of attitude to have. The reason why I typed what I did was because the "lets get something really good for nothing" attitude is the most disrespectful thing I have ever run across. If you or the people you are working for are making money then they should expect to pay for shots...or go shoot the shots themselves. I wish people would put more value on their craft and hard work or even the investment in the equipment. But since everyone is so eager to slit each other's throats...there you go you got your shot.

Stock producers are a little sensitive these days, I know, I am one. The fact is that the stock industry has been taking a beating the last few years, more so in stills than footage, but it is true everywhere. So stock shooters are getting tired of prices going lower and lower and agency profits and splits keep getting higher. The discussion of stock can touch some nerves so we need to be a little more sensitive to all involved, buyers and sellers.

Some of my work goes to Corbis. So after investing in an Epic to get ahead of the pack, the lenses, batteries and accessores, the time, the travel expenses, the helpers, the Adobe and Resolve system, the ultra fast dual Xeon computer and RAID (and today a Nvidia Titan), every shot I submit to them is a gamble that a) they will take it, b) it will sell. Prices are dropping like a whore's drawers.

Last year Corbis upped their percentage to 60%.

An Indiegogo project means that someone is going to get funding. Some of that should go to the content providers, imho.

And then there's this...

Not too sure what you're implying with this, but thanks either way. It's like back then I wrote it to my future self as a reminder to keep it real.

Just FYI, I'm not making any money of this project in particular. I'm helping some good people out on a project, that's all. They didn't ask for these shots, I'm simply in post and could have benefited from a few shots from around the world. Regardless, I've found a better edit and no longer need the shots. At least I learnt a bit about the stock footage market, I didn't have a clue how difficult it is for some. Like I said, I found some pretty good public domain stuff.

And Andrew, if I had the money to travel the world and collect 8 seconds of shots, trust me I wouldn't be here asking for them. In any case, I was never asking for people's hard work for nothing. I was only asking if anyone knew of that which is already on offer, and certainly never meant any disrespect. On the other hand you straight up attacked me personally, so next time you want to go throwing the word disrespect around, you'd best think about it a little more.

Having an Epic does help with selling stock footage. Most of the footage I sell is timelapse related. But every shot is a gamble and you don't know how its going to sell. I just started shooting footage that is requested by a stock footage house to see how that turns out. Usually I just shoot my own stuff that I want to shoot and that does okay.

Still, when you have people trying to get something for nothing its very irritating to say the least.
