  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More wonderful problems to be solved. I could probely put an extra graphic card to acces bios but i want to solve this.

Perhaps someone here had similar problems. Windows is running like normal. Just displaying the bios is not eorking. I think the 690 is overiding the bios.

That's just weird. Does your setup have on-board graphics? If so, they might not be shutting off properly or the board is set to use it instead of the video card. Check to see if there is a firmware update for your video card as well as your system board.

Very strange. First a bad GTX680 now this issue. Perhaps it's the motherboard that is the problem?

If you have another video card, put that in without the GTX690 and have your BIOS reset to factory defaults. Update to the newest if there is one available. You are using the SuperMicro X9DAi board, correct?

Just thinking... What connection and monitor are you using? Plug in another monitor to the primary DVI port, something that supports a lot of different input formats. I think I saw in one of your other threads that you're using an Apple display via DisplayPort. I don't think the card is blocking out anything. I think the monitor can't understand what the card is sending it.

The thing is that I se that windows is loading in. The only thing that dont show is when i hit the ESC and open the bios. Then i have no pitcture. I tried all ports buts its the same.

Have you tried different monitors? Every time I've seen this, it's a signal compatibility issue.

I tried a dell monitor with dvi on all ports, display port on a cinema display. I also tried with connecting 3 different monitors at the same time. What bios are you using? I got the latest installed for the motherboard when i bought it. There is however an never unofficial that i can get sent by the seller. That might fix the problem. Im pretty sure that the 690 is healthy and would not give the problem in another machine. I know a reduser that have the x9dai with two evga 690 and did not have this issue. I have not been messing with bios settings and such.

Little side track
Jeff do you have a decklink extreme in your supermicro x9dai worktstaions? perhaps even the 4k version as I do. Asking since I cant get mine to work. The drivers kill the playback in bmd own express aplication, and premiere and davinci. There is also no signal in or out, but fixing the playback i think would fix the signal issue to.

I'm using the latest official BIOS from SuperMicro, nothing special. GTX680 and GTX690 cards work. I'm running a GTX690 in the system now, no issues. Running a DELL 3007WFP 30" monitor via DVI on it.

No, I do not have a Decklink in this system. I think I only have the GTX690 and an ATTO R680 installed. I'll have to double check that, but I think that's it in this system at the moment. I've run a Rocket in there a bunch, but have that Rocket in a Mac Pro at the moment. My other Rocket card lives permanently in my Z820.

I will put in the older quadro card and se if I can se the bios. Then check if the pcie is set to gen3 instead of gen2 wich atleast in the manual is gen2. Supermicro gave that as suggestion and I have read some graphic cards does work better under pcie 2. Atleast I could then rule this out.

Have a bunch of renders that I have to chew out first!

If you have another graphics card that you can use to access the bios setup, try setting "Above 4G decoding" to disabled.

Not sure on the x9dai, on some versions of ami bios uefi boards this causes a problem with pci-e gen 3 cards.

If you only have 1 gtx690 you should not have a problem with pci resource allocation, if you have multiple gpus you most likely need to leave above 4g decoding enabled.

Cool, I have actually turned that on since supermicro suggested it. Then they suggest me to turn on gen2 on all pcie ports. But I think I just start with turning of that function to se if that helps.

It helped. Bios is back! Still got to get the my decklink catd to function.

Do *NOT* restrict your PCIe slots to gen2! It's true that some cards do have issues with Gen3 slots -- best to put those in an actual Gen2 slot or deal with them on a case by case basis. Most any currently supported card of worth these days already has firmware and driver updates to fix such issues. You have a PCIe Gen3 graphics card and you're just holding it back by restricting the slot. I don't think any of your other cards (like the Decklink) have a problem with Gen3. I've got my Decklink HD Extreme card (in the Z820) in a PCIe X4 gen3 slot. Works beautifully.

I'm surprised they told you to do this...?

As for the "Above 4G decoding". That does need to be enabled for proper PCie memory addressing in 64bit space. If it's causing a BIOS issue, then you need to get in touch with SuperMicro about that and see what's up. I know that some systems from other vendors -- Lenovo being one of them -- had an issue with no BIOS video or ability to enter the BIOS with the Above 4G decoding option enabled. They had to issue a new BIOS to flash the system with.

I will have to check my BIOS version. I think I'm running the latest, but perhaps I'm not. I'm not having these issues with the 690 card.

Have you tried rolling back to an earlier BIOS version?

Can you confirm that you have a x9dai motherboard in your z820 and your bios version. I have not tried to rollback bios versions. So this info is gold. Will wait and here what bios version you have before I try to rollback. Keeping my thumbs its the older version.

come on come on. Please let it be an older bios version!

Got an suggestion agian from Supermicro:

We have several customers report issues when using any Decklink card models
These issues were ALL related to the powersupply

With some customers PSU models (non-SUPERMICRO) the voltage timing of the PSU had to be changed to 25ms.
Other customers tested with several different PSU models until one PSU provided the proper Voltage timing

Regarding other customer using 2 Decklink cards on X9DAi, they were using BIOS 1.0B which you also use

Not sure this helps me cause I have a supermicro 1200psu in my sys-7047A-T.

Z820 has nothing to do with an X9DAi motherboard -- it's HP's own product with their own motherboard and other internal components.

My X9DAi system is built around the SuperMicro tower enclosure with their PSU. I'm running BIOS 1.0b -- which was released last October, or so it seems. GTX690 and ATTO R680 PCIe cards installed and working fine. I have run the RED Rocket in this system just fine. I have not ever tried a Decklink card in this system. I have tested the system with the Quadro 6000, GTX580 3GB Classified Ultra (from EVGA), and EVGA GTX680. All work fine. Resolve runs OK, but I've only run it on this system just for testing in the beginning, have not run it recently. This workstation is used more for 3D modeling, CAD, rendering, intensive processing. It was going to be on a DIT cart and get a Decklink card, keep the Rocket installed, etc.. I decided to concentrate on other things, never rebuilt a DIT cart with this workstation. I think it spends 75% of its time rendering animation frames lately. It screams at that. Pretty much identical to my Z820.

I don't like the SuperMicro tower and PSU all that much. I replaced a couple fans with quieter ones, but the PSU fan is still loud and the unit just seems like it's nothing special. OTOH, the system has been very solid, can't complain. What PSU are you using? I can see where it may cause some issues with timing. Possibly another factor is that I think you're in a 50Hz country too. Shouldn't make a difference, but perhaps it does with switch timings on the PSU and PCIe combinations.

I got the 1200w psu from supermicro.

OK... I really don't know then. I'd have to get my hands on the system for testing or get a lot more info. :(
