  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just received this lens, and I must say that I'm really impressed with the build quality. It's very solid, not extremely heavy and a good size. Optically it's the Canon 70-200, and it's excellent. Tack sharp, even a little sharper than the RED 17-50. It's nicely parfocal. Definitely worth the investment. The picture of my daughter was taken in 5K on the Scarlet and at 200mm, 2.8.
On the other shots you can see a size comparison with my other lenses: GL 11-16, RED 17-50 and RED 18-85.
As you can see it's larger than the 17-50, but quite smaller than the 18-85. I would have no problem using this lens without support, even that it comes with a nice bracket for that.

The mechanics. Makes it a true cine lens. I'm kinda old school when it comes to lenses, and I like the mechanics. I also use Wireless FIZ'es all the time, and this is the proper way to do it IMHO. Clear marks on the lenses, longer rotation than the stock lens and manual iris.
I know that opinions are divided on this, as some like the electronic lenses and what that brings to the table, and to each its own. I like it this way...
 
I got a set of contax still lenses made by GL (25/2.8, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 84/1.4, 135/2.8), i have to say i'm pretty impressed by it. but also, even tho i like them a lot and its solid quaility it's no match compare to CP2 building. my 35mm diaph goes up to 22 even tho its wild closed at 16, and i can hear something inside my 135mm like a spring of a piece of metal going freely in it.
i was wondering to take the 70-200 but it looks a bit expensive for a rehouse, specially cause my experience with GL made me thought that the quality wasnt over the top.
i wouldnt mind paying 6000 or even more for a lens like that, but i have to admit that im a little bit cold feet when i think that they actually just rehouse it, i mean it's like 3 time the price just for housing. i would really enjoy to see the result because if the quality is as good as Duclos, i could go for it, but if it's just as good as my set of contax i wouldnt spend that much.

so i was wonderinng did you see anything special with the lens, like oil on the barrrel, play in the rings, apperture ring not matching the real apperture, play in the mount, back focus problems or anything like that.
cause if it's all good, i think i would go for it also, i really enjoy the communication with Nan, he's a really sweet guy.
 
Oh and also, do you know if this lens comes in metric system or just mperial? that is so boring actually.
 
We have a GL 11 16mm lens here which is very good. I cant speak for other lenses but non is a solid nice guy.
 
I have to say that this lens is really impressive. It's very solid, I have seen no oil, and the rings rotate with the dampening you would expect and they do not have any play. I believe he re-designed the focus rotation, so it actually has a longer barrel travel than the original. I believe that there's a lot more under the hood than just a simple rehousing with just aluminum covering the original lens, but I don't feel like taking it apart to check.;)
 
i guess you were already happy with your 11-16mm thats why you bought the 70-200mm.
i may have to try that lens then.

Very interested in this lens.... Does it hold focus though zooms? Can you post a few R3D 5K stills? 70mm @ 2.8, 70mm @F5.6, 120mm @2.8/5.6, and lastly 200 @2.8/5.6 of the same subject. ( moving camera to maintain frame) I know that sounds like a lot of work, but it would be extremely helpful. I am considering this lens.
 
Hey Timur, if I get some time I'll try to do it, but I can't promise you :) I'll see if I can do it wednesday since I only have a scout that day...

I ordered it directly from Nan. I sent a wire transfer which took a few days to complete, but that's a bank thing. It was with me 4 days after it shipped. So a pretty fast transaction.
 
Well I just got a reply back from Nan stating he can rehouse my Contax lens set to EF but no longer does PL?

Do we really need 3 threads on this lens?
What's going on? Smells like promotion to me.
 
with the exception that users are promoting, not the manufacturer.
Please don't get Nan ban again because of how awesome his rehousing are :)

But I agree, mods should merge all these 3 threads into one.
